Inspiring Conversations with Jean-Que Dar of Tap.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jean-Que Dar.

Hi Jean-Que, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hi there – I’m Jean-Que, a Haitian-American silicon beach techie from Miami living in Southern California. I’m a die-hard Miami Dolphins fan, software tech guy, human rights, and climate change activist. I’m also the guy behind tap.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I had to overcome mental anxiety and race-related tension about the tech industry. My background is in Intellectual Property Law and starting a law firm in Southern California as a black man was a huge obstacle I conquered. While creating the software called tap., it seemed as though I was not a good fit. I did not have a tech degree and learned that less than 1% of black Founders get funded in the tech ecosystem. As a result, I felt defeated even before plunging deep into software development. However, I felt this way before when starting an intellectual property prosecution firm in Santa Monica, California. I reminded myself of the obstacles conquered and proceeded to build my venture.

I was among the many that believed a relevant degree was required to break into tech, which fortunately is invalid. Tech is primarily an industry based on innovation and skills, not academic prowess. Tech jobs require people with a diverse array of strengths and intelligent, fast-learning minds, which I had. The biggest challenge was convincing myself that I was enough. The second biggest hurdle was securing funding. I discovered many online and physical communities that put those fears to bed. I started networking within my industry and VC circles and successfully secured $1.3 MIL in pre-seed dollars from family, friends, and A-List celebrities, none of which were from institutional investors.

How do you think about luck?
As an intellectual property lawyer, my job is to protect and enforce the rights of the creators and owners of inventions, writing, music, designs, and other works, known as “intellectual property.” My firm represented entertainment veterans and celebrities from around the world. I noticed that the entertainment industry is among the world’s most archaic and disenfranchised workforce groups. Despite the geographical location, the life cycle and transactional affairs of content rights are essentially the same worldwide: idea, development, production, distribution, and licensing. After a few case studies, I was on a mission to connect everyone in entertainment.
