Inspiring Conversations with Evina Del Pizzo of Built Strong Strength Club

Today we’d like to introduce you to Evina Del Pizzo.

Hi Evina, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Funny story, I didn’t even want to become a personal trainer. My journey started in college looking for careers and everything in my Sociology Major didn’t sound appealing. At the time, I minored in Sports Psychology and had a wonderful professor named Shane Frehlich who challenged me about how my talents could influence the people I can help with providing a realistic health approach. As much as I didn’t want to believe him, I wanted to help people who needed access to advocating for their health and taking back the independence through fitness and making better choices about their lives. I then had a vision of opening my own business which was influenced by another professor of mine named Norris Dorsey. With his help and guidance, he helped me create a structure and facility I now call Built Strong Strength Club in which I own with my husband today.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was never a smooth road. In the beginning (2019) I just opened a gym with the idea that, “if I build it, they will come.” mentality. Was I ever so wrong. I had no idea how much admin, marketing, financials, community outreach work would go into creating a space where people could come to and feel safe to train at. Once I had people in the facility, I had to learn how to keep them and buy into the brand and what I believed what the right thing was.

A year later (2020), we had to shut our doors because we were considered a non-essential business. We pivoted online and I started taking clients in the park at 6 feet away. Once we were able to open our doors we couldn’t work at full capacity and financial took a large hit. We were forced to ask for help financially and our community kept us afloat by still helping us succeed our dream.

Now, are struggles are the ones we have been praying for. We have an excellent team of trainers who we work side by side with, a 3 year old that keeps us on our toes, and our community of members is growing.

As you know, we’re big fans of Built Strong Strength Club. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
From childhood, I was always a clown. I had 3 older brothers and was always the one fighting for my life to keep up and stay whitty. I loved to just play and be competitive. I never really had groups of people I would belong to as I always favored life at it’s full capacity.

Sports were mandatory in my household. I had to be a part of something. Not because it was a rule, but because I got bored very easy.

Every summer as a kid, my mom worked at a pool. I was always swimming or lifeguarding.
