Inspiring Conversations with Elizabeth Carney of The Sugainn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Carney.

Hi Elizabeth, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I began my journey as a licensed esthetician over seven years ago after graduating from Hacienda La Puente Adult School. Shortly after, I opened The Sugainn, my own beauty studio specializing in sugaring and brow services. As a military spouse for the past eight years, I’ve relocated my business across three different states, adapting and rebuilding each time to continue serving my clients and growing my brand. Throughout this journey, I’ve remained committed to education—attending national esthetics conventions, completing advanced certifications, and continuously expanding my services to meet client needs. Today, I’m proud to operate a thriving studio in Covina, CA, while also teaching as an esthetician instructor at Downey Adult School, where I get to mentor and empower the next generation of beauty professionals

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Being a former military spouse came with its challenges—one of the biggest being the constant need to relocate. Each move meant having to start my business over from scratch, rebuild my clientele, and re-establish myself in a new city. It was tough, but I learned that strong marketing, client referrals, and simply putting yourself out there make a huge difference. I’m proud of the resilience I’ve built through those transitions. Thankfully, we’ve now made our final move, and I’m excited to grow my business permanently in Covina.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Sugainn?
At The Sugainn, I specialize in brow services and full-body sugaring, with a focus on delivering quick, comfortable, and high-quality treatments—I’m especially known for my 10-minute Brazilian services. My goal is to make every client feel confident, cared for, and educated about their skin and hair removal routine.

What sets my business apart is not only my speed and technique, but the genuine connection I build with clients and the expertise I bring from years in the industry. I take pride in staying educated and evolving, which has led me to one of my proudest achievements—becoming an esthetician instructor at Downey Adult School. Teaching future estheticians and helping them discover their passion is a dream come true and a natural extension of my brand’s mission: to empower others through beauty, education, and confidence.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I enjoy most about Covina is its location — it has a small-town feel but is surrounded by so many vibrant cities, which makes exploring and connecting with other communities so easy and fun. Since I’m still fairly new to the area, I haven’t found anything I dislike yet — so far, it’s been a great experience
