Today we’d like to introduce you to Deshawn Spencer.
Hi Deshawn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born on December 10th, 1985 in Los Angeles California. Me and my family faced many obstacles in the inner city, My grandmother’s house burned down in the West Adams District of Los Angeles on Budlong street then our family relocated to Lomita California in the Harbor Hills Housing Projects. At the age of 12, I had began rapping when a friend of mine convinced me to write a verse for a song he was doing and then the rest was history. This same friend would always call me crazy for how my skills on the microphone were so he nick-named me KRAZEE DEE. As time progress people should call me KD for short, then I Later and My last Name to it which would be combined as KD Spencer. I had began doing talent shows, karaoke nights, anything that involved music. When he was 16, my grandmother bought me some studio equipment after seeing how passionate for music I was to keep me off the streets and in a positive direction. I had He began producing and engineering all the local kids in the area making countless songs.
As time went on along came many ups and downs, I remained a solo artist after being a part of many rap groups that never seemed to be as passionate as myself. In my early 20s, I had some run-ins with the law and end up doing 16months in LA County Jail and Prison. Since then I have had more than a little focus on life and accomplishing my goals. A new passion had developed I had thought of starting an independent clothing brand while incarcerated and when I got out I put the idea to work. I got with a great friend like a relative of mine named Nigel Key and told him my idea and would he be my business partner and he agreed. This would be the start of “Solid Blaq Apparel”. We went and did all the paperwork and started making T-Shirts, Sweatshirts and hats to start. We started the brand in 2016 and have been constantly developing ever since. It all started as an idea. In Los Angeles and surrounding cities, we are pretty known but still
Developing more and more. So what I did is added the hip-hop element that I am known for and love to the clothing scene and it works great. We put positive messages on T-Shirts and spread awareness through fashion. Most of the ideas we make are unisex but some are more toward me or women as well. Our goal is to break the barriers of racial disconnect and creating a world of equality for all races, creeds and religions.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been tough I’ve faced many ups and downs for the average small business we take a loss for some time before a gain but the key is to stay at it and learn from all mistakes and that is what makes you last in the long run. I learned that doing music and other business ventures in my past nothing comes easy. I take all that comes with it no struggle, no progress. We represent Peace, Love and Unity that is a big issue in the world today and we admire the woman as well that’s why we use a lady image as our main logo. Respect Thy Queen, we all come from a woman’s womb and shall embrace the woman and all women. That is solid blaq.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Solid Blaq?
We are a brand for the people. We embrace hardships and living in lower-class communities because that is what teaches us that life is what you make it, you can come from anywhere and make something out of it No pain, No gain. We pass out clothes to the homeless at times and donate even at goodwill a few times we just try to give back and have a positive outlook overall. The kids are important also, we always incorporate the children in photo shoots and branding as well. As black men, we face many obstacles but we use nothing as an excuse to block our success we strive every day to make a better tomorrow. We have an email that is under reconstruction due to a few glitches we need to fix www.solidblaq.com and our Instagram is @solidblaq and for those who like music, we also have an album on all streaming platforms under solid blaq or KD Spencer. My personal Instagram is @kd.spencer we do many events in Los Angeles for vendors and we go out to other people’s events as well and connect with fellow entrepreneurs and business owners to build a community within.
