Inspiring Conversations with Chanook David Ahn of The Loft Dental Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chanook David Ahn.

Hi Chanook David, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Connecticut but moved to South Korea when I was five, following my parents’ work. Growing up there, I was convinced I’d become a professional gamer — that was the dream in middle school. Life had other plans. I came back to the United States to attend a Catholic boarding school in Arkansas, which was a complete culture shift, and it reshaped how I thought about discipline and purpose.

In college I studied biology, but honestly, I spent a lot of my free time at the poker table — and I was good at it, winning tournaments and seriously considering going pro. What pulled me away from that path was a position as a research specialist at an AIDS vaccine research lab at UW-Madison. Working there opened my eyes to the power of health science — that you could dedicate your life to solving problems that actually change people’s lives.

That experience led me to dental school, where I became fascinated by the connection between oral health and systemic disease. What started as an intellectual interest quickly turned into a genuine love for dentistry itself — the precision, the artistry, the immediate impact you can have on someone’s quality of life.

After graduating, I completed a two-year General Practice Residency at Yale, where I served as chief resident and was named resident of the year. That’s where my entire dental philosophy took shape. I had two mentors who changed everything for me: Dr. Horblitt in prosthodontics and Dr. Delfini in periodontics. They taught me to think about the mouth as a whole system, not just individual teeth.

From there I chose to specialize in periodontics at the West Los Angeles VA program, which has the strongest clinical training in the country. Under the mentorship of Dr. Joan Otomo-Corgel, my development as a periodontist was finalized. The VA patient population presents some of the most complex cases you’ll ever see, and that training forged the clinician I am today.

Now, as a board-certified periodontist, what drives me is saving teeth that other providers might give up on — navigating the most challenging situations to restore esthetics and function for patients who thought they were out of options. Every difficult case is a puzzle I genuinely love solving.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely wasn’t a straight line. I went from South Korea to a small Catholic boarding school in rural Arkansas, then to college in the Midwest, then to Yale in New Haven, then to the VA in West Los Angeles, and finally to Costa Mesa to open my own practice. Every move meant starting over — new environment, new people, new expectations.

At the time, each transition felt like a disruption. But looking back, every single experience shaped the clinician and the person I am today. The discipline from boarding school, the risk assessment from poker, the scientific rigor from the vaccine lab, the mentorship at Yale, the complex clinical training at the VA — none of it was wasted. It all lined up like pieces of a puzzle I couldn’t see while I was living it.

I think the biggest lesson is that the road doesn’t have to be smooth to take you exactly where you need to go.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Loft Dental Studio?
The Loft Dental Studio is a periodontal practice in Costa Mesa, California, built around one philosophy: save what’s yours. I’m a board-certified periodontist, which means I’ve completed voluntary examinations beyond the requirements of my specialty — it’s a commitment to being held to the highest standard in the field. My training includes a General Practice Residency at Yale, where I served as chief resident and resident of the year, followed by specialty training at the West Los Angeles VA — widely regarded as the strongest clinical periodontics program in the country.

Clinically, I specialize in LANAP laser gum therapy, dental implants, gum surgery, and Wilckodontics — an accelerated orthodontic technique that very few periodontists in Orange County offer. What I’m most known for is taking on cases that other providers have deemed hopeless — teeth that patients have been told need to come out. I believe in exhausting every option to save natural teeth before resorting to extraction, and I use evidence-based protocols and advanced technology like laser therapy to make that possible.

What sets us apart is that we treat every patient like the only patient. This isn’t a volume-driven practice. When you come to The Loft, you see me — not a rotating cast of associates. I take time to explain what’s happening, why it’s happening, and what your real options are. No pressure, no upselling, just honest clinical guidance.

I’m most proud of the trust our patients place in us. We have a perfect 5.0-star rating on Google with over 130 reviews, and that didn’t come from marketing — it came from outcomes and relationships. When a patient who was told they’d lose all their teeth walks out with a plan to save them, and then refers their family to us — that’s the brand in action.

What I want readers to know is simple: if you’ve been told a tooth can’t be saved, get a second opinion. That’s what we’re here for.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I believe that opportunity and chance prefer the prepared mind. I’ve had moments in my career that people might call lucky — landing the research position at UW-Madison, finding the right mentors at Yale, training under Dr. Otomo-Corgel at the VA — but none of those moments would have mattered if I hadn’t been ready for them.

When I got to Yale, I didn’t know Dr. Horblitt and Dr. Delfini would reshape my entire approach to dentistry. But I showed up every day willing to learn, and that openness is what turned a residency into a turning point. The same thing happened at the VA — the program gave me the most complex cases in the country, but the growth only came because I was prepared to rise to them.

In business, it’s the same. I didn’t open The Loft Dental Studio expecting a perfect 5-star reputation to just happen. It came from showing up for every patient, taking the hard cases seriously, and building trust one appointment at a time. If that’s luck, then luck is just what happens when years of preparation meet the right moment.
