Inspiring Conversations with Brian Shafa of Brian Shafa, Plastic Surgery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Shafa

Hi Brian, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in LA and was always interested in Plastic Surgery. While in highschool at Harvard-Westlake, I would shaddow various Plastic Surgeons in town to watch their surgeries and help however they would let me in their offices. I was never shy about networking or meeting established surgeons, which definitely helped open doors for me. I published my first research in plastic surgery after graduating highschool with a surgeon at UCLA. I went on to undergrad and grad school at The Johns Hopkins University and participated in two research labs at Harvard and UCLA before starting medical school. After medical school I completed a 5 year general surgery residency and a 3 year plastic surgery residency. The totality of my science and medical training following high school was 20 years of education, but it all contributed to making me the person I am today.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It is certainly a difficult road to becoming a doctor. The time commitment is huge and the loans pile up. If you aren’t 100% devoted to the field of medicine, the burnout rate is massive. I was fortunate to have met my wife early in my training and she has kept me grounded, focused, and happy. Without the love and support of my family, I don’t know how I would have survived the challenges of residency!

As you know, we’re big fans of Brian Shafa, Plastic Surgery. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I do all facets of plastic surgery, including cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. I am most well known for my cosmetic procedures and body contouring procedures with a heavy focus on limiting scar burden for patients. I have developed a one of a kind reverse tummy tuck surgery to provide skin tightening to the abdomen without the visible scars of a tummy tuck and specialize in all forms of skin tightening including renuvion. My focus in my practice is natural results with as little evidence of surgery as possible.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
The best advice I was ever given was to enjoy my youth and to explore the world before starting medical school, because once you start medical school, your path is pre-determined and your breaks will be limited. It is a truly grueling process to become a physician.
