Inspiring Conversations with Beth Holder of Holder Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Beth Holder

Hi Beth, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It took 10 years from the beginning of graduate school until I became licensed in 2012. Reflecting back, I appreciate all the lessons along the way and how they helped shape me into becoming the therapist I am today. I gained hours and experience by working at a community medical clinic in San Pedro where I saw a diverse client population. I also worked at an emergency children’s shelter for several years where I worked with children ages 11-17 and also was a Runaway and Homeless Youth liaison conducting outreach and working with families in crisis.

I’ve been married for 25 years and have 3 children ranging from 13-20 years old. I started my private practice in 2014 and continued to grow and developed a strong interest in working with clients who have experienced trauma, whether developmental, relational or acute trauma.

In 2021 during covid, I decided to open a group practice due to a strong desire to continue to serve my community. I was full, my trusted colleagues I refer to were also full and I decided to open a group therapy practice so I wouldn’t have to turn people away. As my group, Holder Wellness continued to grow, I wanted to expand my services to community members who would otherwise not be able to access services, so I opened a non profit called Holder Foundation. I am currently focusing on helping other therapists who are in their graduate program and after graduation develop their clinical skills and focusing on helping members of the community while keeping a small caseload of my own clients.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I love having my own practice and being able to develop different skillsets based on what interests me. As a neurodivergent clinician, I like that every day is different, I enjoy connecting and meeting with my clients, colleagues, associates & trainee therapists. The road has been both smooth and bumpy. Some of the struggles are day to day, business struggles- the things they don’t teach us in school. I also had some personal losses 1-2 years ago and believe it is important for therapists to also have their own support. I absolutely love my job and can’t imagine doing anything else. I am fulfilled, I love learning and connecting with people.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

What does success mean to you?
I think success can be measured in various ways. As the owner of a mental health practice, I define success by creating an inclusive environment where clients feel respected and welcomed. Also, by helping clients achieve their treatment goals. Forming long term connections where people feel comfortable referring their friends and family. Providing a workplace culture that involves training and developing other therapists and helping them achieve their goals.
