Inspiring Conversations with Anna Morton of Leaves and Flowers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Morton.

Hi Anna, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always gravitated towards plants, especially herbs and flowers. In 2012 I decided to deepen my herbal knowledge and enrolled in the California School of Herbal Studies where I learned many things, specifically the history of herbal medicine traditions, how to cultivate herbs and how to prepare them for medicinal use. My studies only deepened my passion and by the end of my schooling I knew I wanted to work with plants professionally. Founding a tea company came as a bit of a surprise, but now with almost 12 years behind me, it makes so much sense how tea became the vehicle for which I shared my love of plants.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I wouldn’t say it has been a smooth road. My business partner, Emily, and I have navigated many difficult moments together. Some came from naivety, not really knowing how to run a small business, while other struggles were more personal – significant life changes, etc. Through it all we have learned so much and the business, though still small, feels stable and more mature. We know who we are now, what our gifts are and what we bring to the industry. I feel so proud of what we’ve created.

As you know, we’re big fans of Leaves and Flowers. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Leaves and Flowers is a tea company that celebrates the ancient, intrinsic relationship between humans and plants. Our inspiration comes from the plants themselves – the mythology of their medicine, potent leaves, delicate flowers, and the intoxicating aroma and flavor they release when infused. We keep our ingredients as whole and intact as possible. As they infuse they in essence, re-bloom. Our botanicals and teas are ethically sourced, and organic whenever possible. We are most known for our simple, flavor-driven and functional tea blends. We honor nature in all that we do and through our product invite people to open to the world of plants in their own, intimate way.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I think risk is an important factor in authenticity. To be authentic you must take risks. I think consumers are looking for brands and products that are original, coming from a true place. Since the beginning, we have done things our own way. Perhaps we’d be more “successful” if we had followed a format or taken other peoples advice, but the brand has retained its unique / human feeling because of the decisions we’ve made and some of the risks we’ve taken.
