Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Brown.
Hi Alexandra, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My path into jewelry appraisal grew out of a love for the way gemology brings together science, art, and history. I’ve always been drawn to beautiful objects and the stories they carry, so jewelry felt like a natural fit for me. I love that in my job, I can be sitting at a microscope in a laboratory setting, studying the internal features of a gemstone or the construction of a piece, and at the same time be looking at an object that reflects a specific moment in time. Jewelry is physical art, but it also tells you so much about the era it came from. You see this in things like Victorian mourning jewelry made with the woven hair of a loved one who has passed, or in Retro-era pieces from World War II, when platinum was scarce and jewelers turned to yellow and rose gold instead. I love that every piece can reveal something about craftsmanship, culture, and reflect the story of the time in which it was made.
Before starting California Jewelry Appraisals, I worked in the auction world, including at Heritage Auctions and Abell Auction Co., where I gained hands-on experience researching and evaluating jewelry in the marketplace. I think my background in art and storytelling also naturally led me here—I double majored in Art History and Journalism at New York University, and that combination continues to shape how I look at objects, research them, and communicate their significance. I later earned my Graduate Gemologist diploma from GIA, completed formal appraisal training, and became USPAP compliant, which gave me the technical and ethical foundation for this work.
After many years in the auction industry, I founded California Jewelry Appraisals because I wanted to create something more personal, independent, and client-focused. Today, I provide jewelry consulting services and do appraisals for insurance, and trust and estate purposes. I really value helping people understand what they own during important moments in their lives. Building my own business has been both challenging and rewarding, and I feel very lucky to do work that is both analytical and deeply personal.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve never been someone who knew exactly what path I wanted to do in life. Big decisions like where to go to college, what to major in, or what career path to take never felt completely obvious to me, so my path has definitely not been a perfectly smooth or linear one. One of the biggest challenges was reaching a real burnout point while working in the corporate auction world. I learned so much from that experience, and it gave me a strong foundation, but it also pushed me to step back and really ask myself what kind of work I wanted to build for the long term. I took some time to figure that out before starting California Jewelry Appraisals.
What brought me back to this field was realizing how much I genuinely love gemology and jewelry history, and how much I value having a hands-on career. I love being able to work closely with the pieces themselves—to examine them, handle them, study them, and really understand what they are. There is something very meaningful to me about working with objects that carry history and personal significance, and helping people during major life moments, whether that’s an inheritance, a loss, an insurance need, or a potential sale.
Another challenge was completing my GIA education during the Covid pandemic. That process took much longer than I expected and required a lot of patience and persistence. Like a lot of people, I was trying to keep moving forward through a very uncertain time. Looking back, I think those struggles helped me get clearer on what actually fits me. They pushed me toward building a business that feels much more aligned with who I am and the kind of work I want to do.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about California Jewelry Appraisals?
California Jewelry Appraisals is an independent jewelry appraisal and consulting business specializing in fine jewelry, diamonds, colored stones, and antique and vintage pieces. I provide appraisals for insurance, estate and trust purposes, resale, as well as consulting services for clients who want help organizing, documenting, or preparing a collection for sale.
What really sets my business apart is that I’m a mobile jewelry appraiser. I bring a fully equipped gemology lab directly to my clients, so they can have their jewelry examined in a secure environment of their choosing, whether that’s at home, at the office, or at a bank. For many people, that makes the process feel much safer, easier, and more transparent.
I’m proud of building a brand that feels both professional and personal. My goal is to offer expert, impartial service while also making clients feel comfortable and informed. My appraisal business is not just about assigning a number to an item. It’s about understanding what something is, placing it in the right market context, and helping people make informed decisions about pieces that often carry both financial and emotional value.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
People are often surprised by how little jewelry I wear on a daily basis when I arrive at an appraisal. You’d think a jewelry appraiser would be covered in jewelry, but most days I’m actually wearing very little besides my wedding rings. I do hot yoga and swim regularly, so I’m always taking jewelry off and often forget to put it back on. My love of jewelry has always been more about the craftsmanship, gemstones, history, and meaning behind the pieces than wearing a lot of it myself, but I definitely do enjoy getting dressed up in jewels for a big occasion!
