Hidden Gems: Meet Susan Heam of Station Donuts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Heam.

Susan Heam

Hi Susan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My name is Susan, and for the last five years, my husband and I have managed the little “mom-and-pop” shop known as Station Donuts. At first, the struggle was imminent. Neither of us knew a single thing about baking or decorating donuts. Not only we conquered such obstacles, we are now specialized in letters, numbers and other custom donuts. The city of Yorba Linda may know me as the face of Station Donuts, but I am also the decorator.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Our very first year was the hardest! We lost 95% of customers because 1 we didn’t know what we were doing and 2 some people just didn’t want to give a chance. Some months, we were negative! We even took out loans to pay bills ☹️. No struggles can stop us from going! My husband would come in at 8pm to bake donuts and stay until 11-12noon to help sell. I’d come in at 4am and work until 5-6pm. And sometimes, I had to go buy store supplies after work. We both work seven days a week while raising two kids under 2.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Station Donuts?
Station Donuts is a donut shop located in the city of Yorba Linda. We specialize in custom donuts. We make giant letters, numbers, and character donuts.

Each custom donuts are baked to order using high-quality ingredients to make sure donuts taste as good as they look.

We take time to account for all orders so that they come out as close to our customers’ expectations. Each donut is hand-cut and decorated with great care. It’s a time-sensitive process and the labor of love.

How do you define success?
I am in charge of a thriving business.
