Hidden Gems: Meet Roy Altaras of Roy Altaras Landscape Design & Build

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roy Altaras.

Hi Roy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In my late teens, I started working for a landscape company with a goal to save money for travel. As a young outdoorsman, I enjoyed every aspect of the work in residential gardens; working with plants and rocks in the fresh air, admiring the endless designs and styles, getting to know the homeowners and working on different locations were all a great learning experience.

One day, I was lucky enough to meet a special person who later became my mentor, a multifaceted artist- landscape designer who changed my life completely. In the following six years and in between my trips to Morocco, Asia and Australia he taught me everything I know and had greatly affected my vision and perspective. I decided to widen my knowledge and went to college to study horticulture.

The first project I designed and executed in my early twenties was through a friend’s referral to a known composer and a famous actress who needed to spruce up their property for a PR event. I presented them with my ideas for their yard with so much passion and enthusiasm that they decided to pull the trigger on a project that was way off of what they had in mind. Then came the need to provide an invoice and a corporation number. So, to skip that hurdle, not really wanting to miss out on the opportunity nor for it to be an obstacle for my creative vision, I went on and started the business.

The project’s outcome was a great success and I felt extremely satisfied to have exceeded my first clients’ expectations. From then on, my story began, and here I am today, still doing what I love most.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There was much more to running a landscaping business than I had anticipated. There were the challenges of hiring, training, networking with people as well as handling the office work and the logistics of the project. I’d had a vision of working primarily with plants and nature but I quickly discovered it was all about working with people as much as anything. After many years in business I got to a point where I finally struck a comfortable balance between the in-office and field-based aspects of the job.
What a long, strange trip it’s been but at least I’m enoying the ride!

In order to service more homeowners on larger projects these days, we must maintain quality and educate and train our staff to achieve yet higher standards over and again. It’s all about working with the right people!

We draw inspiration from the south of France landscapes and the Mediterranean.
