Today we’d like to introduce you to Martin Mendez.
Hi Martin , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I discovered my passion for construction at a very young age. When I was about 12 years old, my father owned several properties and handled most of the repairs himself. I was always fascinated watching him work — plumbing, electrical, concrete, tile. He could fix almost anything. Watching him solve problems with his hands inspired me. From that moment, I knew I wanted to follow a similar path.
As a teenager, my father allowed me to work alongside contractors he hired, and we also completed many projects together on our own properties. Those early experiences shaped my work ethic and gave me a deep appreciation for craftsmanship. As I grew older, I worked across several trades including masonry, tile installation, landscaping, and excavation. Eventually I became a heavy equipment operator, gaining valuable experience working on large projects and learning how different aspects of construction come together.
In 2015, I worked with my uncle Luis in excavation and grading. He had a huge influence on my mindset as a professional. He taught me how to calculate job costs, prepare accurate estimates, and most importantly how to confidently present those estimates to clients. He showed me that success in construction is not only about knowing how to do the work, but also about understanding the value of your skills and communicating that value to customers.
In 2017 I moved to Glendora, California, where I continued working in different trades to expand my knowledge and master as many skills as possible. Then the pandemic arrived and everything changed. I lost my job and found myself delivering food through Postmates just to survive. It was one of the most difficult periods of my life, but it also became the turning point that pushed me toward entrepreneurship.
Eventually I found a job with a landscaping company. My employer quickly noticed my abilities, and I asked for the opportunity to help with estimates and closing projects. He gave me the chance, and the first three jobs I bid were all successfully secured. That experience proved to me that I had the ability to grow beyond simply working in the field.
However, shortly after that, my hours were reduced and I was only working a few days a week. Around that same time, my wife told me she was pregnant. I remember realizing that I couldn’t keep depending on someone else to determine my future or the value of my time. That moment became the spark that changed everything.
With only $40 in my pocket, I went to ACE Hardware and bought two shovels and a pick. I didn’t even own a vehicle, so my ex-wife let me borrow her small Chevrolet HHR. My brother stood by my side from the beginning, and together we started taking on any small job we could find during quarantine. Without his support, the journey would have been much harder.
I also owe a great deal of gratitude to my mother. She has always supported our business and believed in our decisions from the very beginning. She taught me to always be on the lookout for opportunities and to approach everything I do with the mindset of doing it the best way possible. Without her guidance, encouragement, and values, none of this would have been possible.
One of our first larger projects almost became a lesson the hard way. I was so nervous preparing the estimate that I accidentally underbid the labor by nearly half. We still completed the project, but the profit was minimal. Instead of discouraging us, it became part of our learning process and helped us grow stronger and more disciplined as business owners.
Building a business from nothing is never easy. It took years to gain trust, reputation, and recognition in the community. There were moments when I felt like giving up, but perseverance, discipline, and faith in the process kept me moving forward.
Today, after eight years of hard work, we have built a respected construction company serving the Glendora area. What started with two shovels and determination has grown into a trusted business known for quality craftsmanship, honest work, and fair pricing. My mission remains the same as it was when I first began, to serve the community, build with integrity, and create opportunities for the people who work alongside me.
More importantly, my journey has taught me that success doesn’t come from having the perfect opportunity, it comes from creating your own opportunity when none seems to exist. Hard work, perseverance, and belief in yourself can turn even the most difficult situations into the foundation for something greater.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My journey has definitely not been a smooth road. Like many entrepreneurs, the biggest challenges came at the moments when everything seemed uncertain.
One of the hardest periods in my life happened during the pandemic. I lost my job and had to start delivering food through Postmates just to survive. At the same time, my ex-wife told me she was pregnant, which added even more pressure and responsibility. I remember feeling overwhelmed and questioning how I was going to provide for my family.
Another major challenge came when I was working for a landscaping company. After helping the company secure several projects through estimates I prepared, my work hours were suddenly reduced and I eventually lost the job. That experience made me realize that depending entirely on someone else for my livelihood was a risk I didn’t want to take anymore.
Starting my own company was also extremely challenging. I began with almost nothing — just $40 to buy basic tools and no vehicle of my own. My brother and I took on small jobs wherever we could find them. There were times when money was very tight, and mistakes in early estimates meant we sometimes worked long hours for very little profit.
Another challenge was building trust in the community. When you start a business from nothing, people don’t immediately know your work or your reputation. It takes years of consistent effort, quality craftsmanship, and honesty to build that trust.
Despite all those obstacles, those challenges shaped the person and business owner I am today. They taught me resilience, discipline, and the importance of never giving up when things get difficult. Every challenge became a lesson that helped strengthen both my business and my character.
As you know, we’re big fans of Mendez Remodeling & Construction. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Mendez Remodeling & Construction is a family-owned construction company based in Glendora, California. We specialize in residential remodeling and construction services, including kitchen and bathroom renovations, custom carpentry, tile work, landscaping, exterior improvements, and general home upgrades. Our goal is to help homeowners transform their spaces with quality craftsmanship, attention to detail, and reliable service.
What sets our company apart is our hands-on approach and the wide range of experience behind our work. Over the years I have worked in multiple trades such as masonry, tile, landscaping, excavation, and heavy equipment operation. That experience allows us to understand projects from multiple perspectives and deliver solutions that are both practical and high quality.
Another important part of our business is that we treat every project as if we were working on our own home. We believe that trust, transparency, and honest communication are just as important as the work itself. Many of our clients come from referrals and repeat customers, which is something we are very proud of because it shows the trust we have built in our community.
As a local business, we take pride in serving homeowners in Glendora and the surrounding areas by providing fair pricing, dependable service, and high-quality results. Our mission is not only to complete projects but to build lasting relationships with our clients and contribute positively to the community we work in.
What I am most proud of is that our company was built from the ground up through hard work, perseverance, and the support of my family. What started with very limited resources has grown into a trusted construction company, and we continue working every day to improve, expand our services, and maintain the standards that our clients expect from us.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned along my journey is that success doesn’t come from waiting for the perfect opportunity, it comes from creating your own opportunity when none seems to exist. There were moments in my life when things were uncertain, when I lost jobs, struggled financially, and had to start from almost nothing. Those moments taught me that perseverance, discipline, and belief in yourself are more powerful than any obstacle.
I also learned that mistakes and challenges are part of growth. In construction and in business, not everything goes as planned, especially when you are starting from the ground up. But every challenge becomes a lesson that helps you improve and become stronger as a professional and as a person.
More importantly, my journey has taught me that hard work and determination can transform difficult situations into the foundation for something greater. When you stay focused, keep learning, and refuse to give up, even the toughest moments can lead to opportunities you never imagined.
