Today we’d like to introduce you to Marosi White.
Marosi, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a Founder and Principal Designer at Accent Design and Interiors, LLC, a full-service Interior Design studio based in Sacramento. I am a native to the beautiful country of Malawi and moved to the United States as a teen to attend University in 2006. While practicing Interior Design was always a passion, my career in the field did not begin until ten years after graduating from University. I studied Marketing and Management Information Systems and have degrees in both fields of study.
Moving from Malawi to the US and adjusting to a new country and culture at Sixteen was intimidating, but the core community I found in college taught me the importance of pouring into and building up strong relationships and connections in my surrounding community. With that guiding me along, I later returned to school to get my Degree in Interior Design and began to pave my way into the industry through Teaching Interior Design at the Art Institute of California. After 8 years of teaching, I felt that it was time to fully immerse myself in practicing Interior Design and established Accent Design and Interiors, LLC, a full-service Design Studio. I knew for certain, that I did not want to work for anyone, and starting my own business was the only way forward.
When I look back, I wouldn’t have done it any other way. My client base is diverse, and all have afforded me the opportunity to work on Residential and Commercial spaces, as well as Senior Living, Office, and Retail projects. There is no project that I will shy away from working on, especially when it’s my very first attempt at working on such a project. At the Core of my business model is Education, Community Connection, and Culture.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I know the value of feeling supported through big changes, and in 2010 when I established my Interior Design Studio, I have remained rooted in my community and have embraced those who support me. With some knowledge from College in Business Management, and a whole lot of courage, I knew that I was going to have to figure things out as I go, and in order for me to continue forward, I had to be open-minded, easily adaptable, and willing to take risks. There never seems to be enough time in the day to do it all. As a business owner, its easy to work all the time. Establishing a work-life balance that is sustainable has been difficult in the past, but now things are much better. Establishing boundaries and managing expectations with Clients, and members of the Design team has come with time and a great deal of confidence. Dialing in our communication platforms has helped us out tremendously. Knowing one’s worth is very important when it comes to negotiating contracts. It has been difficult in the past to walk-away from a projects that were not a good fit. We now have systems in place that allow for an effective new client on boarding process, which helps us take the time to understand our Clients from the very beginning. Finally, Maintaining a unique perspective on Design and maintaining an authentic voice as a Designer in an industry that is so dynamic and ever-evolving is an area that will continue to be a work in progress.
