Today we’d like to introduce you to Marc.
Hi Marc, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started in the commercial real estate brokerage business upon my graduation from the University of Southern California. My focus was on serving high-rise office building owners, and renters, secure and negotiate lease transactions. I did that for about four years and that ultimately led me to my next job, working for the Segerstom family, in high-rise office building and luxury retail real estate management. It was there, at the family-owned South Coast Plaza in Orange Country, where I learned how to manage property, serve clients, and market to retail consumers, predominantly women. After a number of years, I started to become intrigued with the entertainment business, specifically the idea of becoming a talent or literary agent. All my life I’ve been obsessed with music and film and I wanted to get a job where I could work in a field that I was passionate about. I didn’t know many people in the entertainment business, so I called a USC friend, who introduced me to Kerry Gordy — a music producer and son of Motown founder Berry Gordy — who taught me a lot about working with entertainment clients and music artists. From there, I leveraged that experience to get a job in the mailroom at United Talent Agency and, ultimately, as an agent trainee in the Motion Picture Literary Department. After three years at UTA, I became a literary manager at Zide/Perry, then started my own literary management company, Crescendo Entertainment Group. After a screenwriters strike forced the closure of my business, I pivoted into digital entertainment and media and eventually landed a job as the National Sales Director for Fox Television Network and American Idol, where we sold advertising campaigns and sponsorships for the network and all of its ancillary channels. It was a tremendous opportunity that I really enjoyed. Seven years with Fox ended after a divisional reorganization and, at the age of 55, I reactivated my real estate license in order to serve real estate clients in the entertainment, media and technology industries. My experiences with two prior real estate brokerage companies eventually got the attention of Compass and I was recruited by them in 2019. I’ve been with Compass ever since and now run a team, The Marc Hernandez Group, out of our Beverly Hills office. I’m very happy to be with Compass.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think challenges are par for the course and, naturally, I have had a few. I think starting a literary management company, my first endeavor as an entrepreneur was an exciting challenge that was ended by a writer’s strike. Learning the television advertising business was not an easy task, but I relished and grew from it. And, as a real estate agent, I experience challenges — such as the economy, interest rates, and inventory — that are part and parcel to the business, but the good agents understand how to navigate these challenges for their clients.
As you know, we’re big fans of The Marc Hernandez Group at Compass, Beverly Hills. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
At Compass in Beverly Hills I represent, in a fiduciary capacity, buyers and sellers of luxury residential real estate. My team and I represent clients in the Greater Los Angeles Area, from Silver Lake to Santa Monica, from Venice to The Valley. My personality, communication, connection and negotiation skills — as well as my creativity and tenacity — set me apart from the rest of the pack in this business. I love what I do and always make myself available for my clients and colleagues.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success by the connections I make and the impact I have on them. I love working with people, fostering meaningful relationships, and empowering them to reach their goals and make them feel better about it. For me, true success is celebrating victories with my clients and helping them achieve what matters most, while protecting them along the way.
