Today we’d like to introduce you to Keyon (Phresh) Patterson.
Hi Keyon (Phresh), can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m the oldest of my mom’s three kids so I always had to be a leader. I grew up knowing that my sisters would one day want to follow or look up to their big brother so I’ve always wanted to do great things for the sake of steering them in the right direction.
Unfortunately, I didn’t always make the best decisions but ultimately, that was my motive. I’ve always had the entrepreneur drive but I felt like I was stuck in whatever field I was in at that moment. I went from being a guy who was getting heavy love in the streets to a guy who fell to my knees when I felt the love of God for the first time! The changes didn’t happen overnight but it was there that I find my purpose for life & began to move into entrepreneurship, fashion, design, ministry, and my newest venture, which is being an author. Mess of Man by Keyon Phresh Patterson is available on Amazon.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not been smooth whatsoever!! The hardest thing in the world to do is change! With my background, for me to even say that I was giving up the street life and everything in it meant that I was legit giving up family!! Going from being well-known for what I was involved into being looked as a sellout for making a better decision for my life was the hardest thing I had ever done! Everyone was asking, “Bro! What are you doing?” “Why would you give this up?” They didn’t understand that something on the inside changed! I would be fake for choosing to live a life that was different from what I believed. They knew Sleeze (My old nickname). What they didn’t know was that Sleeze was dead! Now here we are 15 years later and I’d say it was a beautiful funeral! I’d do it all over again!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Verb Society?
My brand is called Verb Society & we are a brand who has been called to the world! That may sound strange to some but the Bible tells us to” Go into all the world and preach the gospel.” This is not a suggestion yet a command! Biblically speaking, we believe that just as Apostle Paul was called to take this Jewish Jesus to the gentiles, we are also called to take the good news in the form of apparel to the lost, hurting, & broken. It’s imperative for us to be a Paul to the people instead of being Appalled by the people! Our brand takes the wisdom of Proverbs as well as other books of the Bible and we display it on our clothing. We specialize in hats, hoodies, all things retro, and we are also sneaker heads so we have sneaker tees coming soon. We believe that everyone can benefit from this great book that we’ve all come to know & love! We are called Verb Society for that very reason. ProVERB Society. This is NOT your grandmother’s gospel! We bring love, life, laughter, & light to the game! You’re always welcome at our table! Tap in!
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I absolutely love Los Angeles for its rich culture!! I’ve only been here for a year and a half now but the way that we have been embraced by this beautiful city has been mind-blowing. Since I love fashion of course I love the fashion district. That was just a given. In fact, I loved it so much that I moved within walking distance to it! I’m from ATL so I’ll always love the South but if I’m honest LA definitely has my heart!!
