Hidden Gems: Meet Kerry McMahon of Physical Therapy On Point, P.C.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerry McMahon.

Hi Kerry, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I moved to Los Angeles to pursue a degree in dance at Loyola Marymount University, where I was first introduced to the fields of physical therapy and Pilates rehabilitation. That exposure sparked a deeper interest in human movement and healing, ultimately leading me to pursue a career in physical therapy. After graduating, I spent four years teaching Pilates, which solidified my decision to become a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT).
I was honored to be accepted into both USC and NYU for graduate school and ultimately chose NYU—a lifelong dream—so I could live in New York City and work closely with the performing arts community. What drew me to NYU was not only its vibrant location, but also the small class sizes and a well-rounded curriculum that emphasized both academic rigor and hands-on clinical experience.
While I initially planned to specialize in neurology, my clinical rotations revealed a strong affinity for orthopedics. After earning my DPT, I returned to Los Angeles and have spent the past nine years working in outpatient orthopedic clinic settings. This experience has allowed me to work with a wide range of patients, helping them achieve their mobility goals and regain confidence in their bodies.
My background in dance naturally led me to work with performers, providing backstage physical therapy and injury prevention support. This niche has become one of my specialties. As a former dancer, I understand the unique physical and emotional demands of performance, and I bring that insight into every session.
This passion eventually inspired me to launch my own concierge physical therapy clinic—a venture that allows me to provide highly personalized care. Over the past few years, I’ve dedicated myself fully to building a practice centered on trust, accessibility, and wellness. I tailor each treatment plan to include strength training, rehabilitation, and Pilates-based movement, giving my patients the tools they need to feel and perform their best.
What started as a side project has grown into a deeply fulfilling career. Today, I work with clients of all ages, with a special focus on performers, athletes, and individuals with hypermobility. The journey has been both challenging and rewarding, and I’m excited to continue evolving my practice to meet the unique needs of each person I serve.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Surprisingly, starting my own physical therapy practice has been smoother than I initially expected. While building my clientele, I continued working part-time at a clinic to stay grounded and maintain financial stability. Like any new business owner, I’ve encountered my fair share of learning curves—everything from operations to marketing—but every challenge has been worth it. Most of my clients have come through word of mouth, and more recently, I’ve begun to actively market my services to broaden my reach.

One of the most difficult choices I’ve had to make was turning down a dream opportunity: working as a physical therapist on a global tour with a music artist and their dancers. Traveling full-time and supporting performers has always been a dream of mine, but launching a business required my full commitment. Though it was hard to decline, I was incredibly honored to be considered, and I trust that a similar opportunity may present itself again in the future.

We’ve been impressed with Physical Therapy On Point, P.C., but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Physical Therapy on Point (a Professional Corporation) is a concierge outpatient clinic based in Santa Monica. I provide personalized treatment for individuals of all ages—from pediatric to geriatric populations—with a focus on orthopedic injuries (such as low back, neck, and knee pain), hypermobility disorders, chronic pain, and neurological conditions. My services include both in-clinic appointments and concierge in-home visits, offering a flexible and convenient approach to care.
Whether working with elite performers, dancers, athletes, or individuals simply striving to move pain-free, my goal remains the same: to help people feel stronger, more confident, and supported every step of the way. I also collaborate closely with physicians to ensure my patients receive comprehensive, coordinated care.
I am a highly skilled physical therapist with certifications in strength and conditioning as well as Pilates. With experience in fast-paced environments—such as backstage settings—I excel at quickly evaluating injuries and providing compassionate care that acknowledges both the physical and emotional aspects of recovery.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Growing up, I imagined myself touring the world as a backup dancer and performing on stage. But while I was in college, I began to realize that I didn’t have the same confidence as others during auditions. After graduation, one of my professors—who was choreographing for a major singer—invited me to be part of a small project. It was exciting to get a glimpse into the professional dance world, but it also gave me clarity: I no longer wanted to be the one on stage.
While studying dance at Loyola Marymount University, I spent a lot of time in the school’s dance wellness program, which included a physical therapist and a Pilates instructor. That space became my second home. I was frequently told I didn’t “dance with my core,” and learning how to connect with my body through science and movement completely shifted my perspective. I realized that I loved the behind-the-scenes work of helping dancers stay healthy and perform at their best. That passion is what ultimately led me to pursue a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree.

During my time in physical therapy school, I discovered something surprising—I have hypermobility! It often led to injuries from simple movements like sitting and standing, especially after long hours of dancing and working. I also realized that many doctors aren’t fully aware of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. Thankfully, my professors were amazing and provided invaluable support, which I truly appreciated. I’m excited to share this knowledge and hopefully raise awareness for others facing similar challenges!
