Hidden Gems: Meet Jeffrey Segal of Mystic Journey Bookstore and Mystic Journey Crystals

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeffrey Segal.

Jeffrey Segal

Hi Jeffrey, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am the founder and owner of Mystic Journey Bookstore and Mystic Journey Crystals, located in Santa Monica, California. Before opening my stores, I practiced law for over 25 years, beginning in 1986. After ten years of practice, I realized the legal profession was not for me, but the “golden handcuffs” of law’s financial rewards kept me practicing until 2006, when I “gave myself” cancer to finally force me out of the field of law. Intuitively rejecting chemotherapy, instead choosing a “natural” path of healing. I put together a team of healers, including an acupuncturist, a bodyworker, an energy worker, and a therapist. After six months of working with my team, the cancer had disappeared. It has never returned.

During my healing process, I decided to follow my passion, and in 2008, I opened Mystic Journey Bookstore, one of the largest spiritual book and gift stores in Los Angeles. Nine years later, I expanded the bookstore’s offerings and opened Mystic Journey Crystal Gallery, retailing some of the highest quality and largest crystals and geodes found anywhere in Southern California.

In 2022, I became both a life coach and author. My book, The Tiny Book of Big Manifestation, offers its readers both techniques and a Code of Life to assist them in creating the life they want. In 2023, I took the next step on my mystic journey and launched The Mystic Journey Podcast, which can be heard on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. Most recently, I became a consultant for those looking to open a retail store in the mind, body, and spirit field or otherwise enter into this community via teaching, coaching, or entrepreneurship.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No road, whether it be in one’s business life, personal life, or even spiritual life, is “smooth” at all times. Nor is it supposed to be. Challenges, in all aspects of life, are given to us as opportunities and chances to grow and evolve. I’ve had those in both of my businesses, including being forced to unexpectedly relocate the bookstore because of a city order to my landlord, losing a lease after signing it and paying the deposit, seeing rents rise, online sales rise, interest rates rise, and of course, a months-long Covid shutdown.

But we have and are continuing to navigate it all as we move toward the 16th anniversary of Mystic Journey Bookstore.

We’ve been impressed with Mystic Journey Bookstore and Mystic Journey Crystals, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Mystic Journey Bookstore and the adjacent Mystic Journey Crystal Gallery is a one-stop metaphysical location unlike any other in the Los Angeles area. Whatever one’s metaphysical needs, we have it. From classic spiritual and self-help books to books that are more esoteric, Mystic Journey carries it. We also offer a wide variety of tarot and oracle cards, candles, incense, sage, and copal. At both our bookstore and our crystal gallery, Mystic Journey also offers the highest quality crystals and geodes of all shapes, sizes, and types of crystals and stones that one can find anywhere in Southern California. While many stores now carry some crystals, or some books, some incense, or some oracle decks, no single business offers the depth and variety of metaphysical items that Mystic Journey does. So instead of one having to go from one place to another, one store to another, driving and looking and shopping all over, one can come to Mystic Journey to find everything they need.

Beyond this, what Mystic Journey is undoubtedly best known for is the quality and the sourcing of its crystals. Every crystal and stone, both the smaller ones in our bookstore and larger ones (up to thousands of pounds and 5-6 feet tall) in our crystal gallery are personally sourced and selected by me. I travel around the world to Brazil, Uruguay, Madagascar, and more, and go to the mines and the workshops where the crystals are brought from and worked on. I work directly with, and even stay with the families who do all this work so that I know the process of how the crystals and stones are brought out of the earth and made ready to be placed in people’s homes and businesses. I do this so that I know all work with the crystals is done is done ethically and all the people who do the work are treated fairly and with care. Anyone who acquires a crystal or stone from Mystic Journey can do so with the trust and confidence that I have been directly involved with bringing the piece to them. Finally, people know that if they are looking for a specific type of crystal or stone or a specific size or shape of stone or crystal, they can reach out to me, and I can personally source that crystal or stone for them.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
If one is looking for a mentor or looking to expand their community, I would suggest getting a referral from an individual or business that you have known or worked with for a long time and that you have come to know and trust. This person or business doesn’t necessarily need to be in the same field that you are looking into, for they may have come across someone who is perfect for what you need.  As with so many things in life, one needs to ask the Universe for help to bring in the connection they need. Sometimes, just asking the Universe for help is all that is needed, for it is there to support and guide everyone.
