Today we’d like to introduce you to Jared Goulette.
Hi Jared, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in the Green Mountains of Williston, Vermont. I went to Champlain Valley Union High School with an amazing group of people and proudly took every art class my highschool offered. I then moved to Portland, Maine upon receiving a scholarship to attend The Maine College of Art located in the heart of the city in 2007. After graduating from MECA in 2011 I immersed myself in the art community in Portland, channeling my passion for art into a successful career as a Professional Mural Painter. I currently live in Maine and work all over New England and the USA.
My approach to mural painting is characterized by a vibrant color palette, utilizing premium spray paint that allows me to achieve striking hues and intricate details. My techniques, which incorporate shadowing and highlight effects, add depth and dimension to my murals, elevating them from mere decorations or patterns to more immersive visual experiences. Whether adorning the walls of bustling urban spaces, private homes or serene rural landscapes, my murals invite viewers to engage with the art on a personal level. As I continue to push the boundaries of my craft I strive to remain a prominent figure in the New England and East Coast art scenes, consistently delivering an array of custom creations that leave a lasting impression on the communities I work with each year.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have most certainly been some challenges along the way! After graduating from college it took me years of working long hours at “non-art” jobs to pay rent etc. like bartending, cooking in restaurants, working for a moving company, and other professions that I was immediately sure were not what I wanted to do full time as my career. It was difficult to build up a portfolio of murals while still maintaining a full time job and it was only after years of struggling to juggle both that I found myself in a position where I was able to confidently make the decision to quit my day jobs and focus on painting murals full-time as a professional artist.
Taking on art as a full time career was also very stressful and sometimes it still is! It was hard to find enough jobs to pay my bills and it is still a constant struggle to locate new clients. Being a full-time artists is a never-ending job; it takes long-hours, working weekends, and disappointment when clients back out of cool and exciting projects. I often find myself wishing that I didn’t have to work so hard to maintain a social media presence as well, it too takes time and effort and sometimes I simply feel like I would prefer ignoring my phone/computer for weeks on end. These things are all part of the profession though, and I do really enjoy being able to do what I love every day, make an impact in communities around the country, create art for a living and share my skills with the world!
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I started my own business as The Color Wizard in the summer of 2018 and am proud to say that I have successfully maintained a profitable, full-time art career ever since! I specialize in large-scale murals and primarily use a huge array of premium spray paints to create the artwork. I would say that I am know for my unique style and ability to create a variety of different designs for each client I take on. I try to create something unique and custom for each new project and I very much enjoy the challenge of taking on new things that I have never tried or painted before. I can paint signage, lettering, realism, abstract art, graffiti, and lately I especially like to paint things that have a wet and or chrome-like appearance. I find the stylistic techniques required to accurately achieve these visual effects to be exhilarating, vast, humbling and when done correctly, create stunning large-scale pieces of artwork that stand out and really catch the eye of those in the communities where I paint them.
Brand wise I am proud to have worked with clients such as The Maine State Prison (where I had an opportunity to include inmates in the painting process) as well as some prominent local companies in Maine like the Maine Medical Center, The VIA Design Agency, The City of Portland and The Portland Parks & REC Department, some of which I have had the pleasure of working with multiple times over the years.
