Today we’d like to introduce you to Fransisco Aguilera.
Hi Fransisco, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo back in 1996 with my Bachelors Degree. Once I graduated from university I was then hired on by Bechtel Corporation- one of the largest construction companies today. My brothers had already been working in construction for other smaller companies but still very successful names. That is where they gained much of their experience in operating heavy equipment and how to specialize in the services we offer today. After working for Bechtel for many years there was a lot of time spent away from my family. My wife, my kids, and my brothers and sisters. I would get sent to manage projects in other countries and parts of the world but for many months at a time. Eventually my brothers and I decided to pool our resources and experience together to start our own company- Aguilera Brothers Construction. That is where we began to construct our own company from the ground up! Ever since then we have tried our absolute best to grow this company. Day in and day out my brothers and I would dedicate ourselves to expanding and getting new projects. Over time we began to hire more employees, buy more advanced equipment, and found new ways to become more and more efficient to combat our challenges out in the field.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been a pretty smooth road over the years but of course with time new challenges begin to arise. There are times when the economy begins to slow down and people are not really needing new projects constructed. Rain is also another huge factor that must be considered every year. Projects can really slow down and cause delays just from a few days of rain which is always something we need to look out for during the raining season. Other times there is so much work that we can not even keep up! We don’t always have enough employees to be bidding some projects let alone have the crews to begin working on those projects so that is when it gets pretty difficult. Finding new qualified employees is also a challenge. We try to find the best people who will always help chase the same goals we all have for the company.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Aguilera Brothers Construction is a minority owned general contracting company that specializes in many different services. We are located in Santa Paula, CA and serve all of Ventura County and surrounding areas. We have licenses A & B which allow us to offer the services we do. We offer grading, underground utilities, concrete work, excavation, storm drains, and more. A lot of our services are performed by our own employees and we are always trying to find new projects that we specialize in. We have all the equipment and resources needed to perform efficiently and on time. We take pride in the work that we do and never settle for below standards. We are always happy to take on new projects and give your project a look no matter how big or small it is.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I think risk taking is a huge factor in success. You need to be willing to jump right into the water without the fear of drowning. Leaving my job at Bechtel Corporations was one of the biggest risks I had to take, not knowing if I was going to be able to create my own successful company. I had to get out of my comfort zone every day just to ensure that this risk would not go south. Buying new equipment is a risk. Will it be able to pay itself off? Will it be a liability to this company or an asset? Taking on huge projects is a risk. Did we estimate this properly? Will we be able to manage a project of this scale? Instead of over analyzing everything, be willing to take those risks. If not, your company will never grow and you will always stay within what is comfortable.
