Hidden Gems: Meet Evan Shay of Salvage Europe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Evan Shay.

Hi Evan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
With a family history in logging dating back to the early days of Australia, timber is in my blood and I knew one day my passion for it would take me somewhere. After graduating university, I entered the hospitality industry and founded a group of hotels & restaurants which eventually expanded to 40 sites across Australia, Japan and England, employing over 450 people. But my passion for timber never left me. Eventually, I combined my past business experience with my passion for timber and joined James as co-owners of Salvage Europe. Now, with a focus on the unique, service & sustainability – I am leading Salvage Europe to become the largest importer of French Oak in the United States.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The effects of the pandemic on the shipping industry where dramatic. Shipping costs went up more than 300% and even then everything was delayed to arrive.
