Today we’d like to introduce you to Elinor Bawnik.
Hi Elinor, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my career with a deep interest in understanding human behavior and relationships, which led me to pursue my Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy at Alliant International University. Early on, I worked in a range of clinical settings with individuals and couples in crisis, where I saw how patterns like anxiety, relational conflict, and personality dynamics can deeply impact people’s lives.
My experiences shaped how I practice, using direct communication, collaborative practice, humor, and empathic connection to work towards real behavioral change. After working in various settings, I founded EB & Flow Marriage Therapy, my own private practice where I blend evidence-based treatment along with a more personable and customized experience for the individuals and couples I work with today.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a completely smooth road. Early on, one of the main challenges was finding my place across different clinical settings. I had to learn how to translate theory into practice while working with high-acuity clients, crisis situations, and complex relationship dynamics. There’s a steep learning curve in developing clinical confidence and a clear therapeutic voice. Later, transitioning into private practice brought a different set of challenges, including building a business, managing operations, and creating a sustainable structure while maintaining quality care.
Clinically, much of my growth came from working with more acute and high-conflict cases. Those experiences pushed me to deepen my training, become more direct and structured, and tolerate the reality that progress is often nonlinear. There were also periods of questioning my niche and approach, which ultimately led to a more intentional, integrative model that reflects how I practice today.
As you know, we’re big fans of EB & Flow Marriage Therapy Inc. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
EB & Flow Marriage Therapy, Inc. is a private practice focused on helping individuals and couples create meaningful, lasting change in how they relate to themselves and each other. My work integrates evidence-based approaches, including CBT, ERP, ACT, and DBT, with a relational, direct, and collaborative style. I place a strong emphasis on both deep understanding and practical, measurable change, particularly for clients navigating OCD, anxiety, relationship conflict, and long-standing personality patterns.
What sets the practice apart is the deep connections I have with clients, my insight and expertise, and my ability to personalize treatment. Sessions are intentional and goal-oriented, while also making space to explore the underlying patterns driving behavior. I bring a high level of clinical insight to the work, often using humor to create connection and perspective, and I consistently invest in ongoing training to stay aligned with current research. The goal is to offer therapy that is both rigorous and human. I support clients in not only understanding themselves more clearly, but making changes that are sustainable over time.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is the impact this work can have on how people experience their lives. When someone becomes more aware of their patterns, learns how to respond differently, and starts to feel more grounded in themselves and their relationships, it often leads to a noticeable shift in their overall well-being. They feel more stable, more connected, and more capable of navigating challenges. Changes towards becoming healthier, more intentional, and more aligned have real weight, not just internally but in how they show up in the world.
I also believe that change doesn’t happen in isolation. When one person does meaningful therapeutic work, it tends to ripple outward into their relationships, families, and broader communities. The way they communicate, regulate, and relate can influence others in subtle but significant ways. Over time, those shifts can compound. The work may happen one person at a time, but the broader goal is larger. I believe I am contributing, in a realistic and grounded way, to healthier systems and more connected communities.
