Today we’d like to introduce you to Davia and Earl Hunter.
Hi Davia and Earl, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
At Via Davia Vintage, we pride ourselves in having amassed a comprehensive collection of clothing and accessories for everyone from the casual vintage shopper, to the fashionista, to the serious vintage clothing collector. Whether in our booth or at a private appointment, our goal is to give you an experience in vintage fashion. We have been grateful to curate showings at venues across the country. Currently, we are proud to exhibit at A Current Affair (LA, Brooklyn, San Francisco, Texas) and Pickwick Vintage Show.
Now in Van Nuys, CA our “Garage” has been upgraded to “The Backhouse,” still offering private appointments. As Via Davia Vintage evolved, we decided that our collection should also be made available to a wider audience. Thus, viadaviavintage.com was born.
After 23 years of doing what we love with who we love, the adoration is expanding to VDV Studio, a vintage showroom experience. We are taking appointments now. DM through Instagram or send us an email to [email protected].
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Parts of our journey have been incredibly smooth and rewarding. We consider ourselves extremely lucky to have found each other and a shared love of so many things including vintage fashion. We have been in the game for 23 years and have experienced our fair share of bumps along the way. Initially, from working to get a good space at flea markets to earning the respect of the vintage community, the struggle was consistent. We always prioritized family, so rather than open a brick and mortar we opted for a home-based business. When we created “The Garage”, we experienced the challenge of being the best-kept secret in town. People enjoyed our curation but seemingly liked to keep it to themselves. We definitely leveled up, however, after making our way into high-end shows like A Current Affair in LA, NY and SF in addition to Pickwick Vintage now at ROW DTLA. Even still, while at these shows, we experienced having to prove ourselves all over again as the vintage community has grown over the years.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Via Davia Vintage is one of the few Black-owned family vintage clothing brands. We curate our collection to be inclusive of a wide variety of tastes and sizes for everyone. A point of particular pride is our extensive footwear collection. Whether you are a casual vintage shopper, serious collector, designer, or wardrobe professional, we have something for everyone. When one makes an appointment at our showroom, they can expect an experience tailored to their needs and desires. We are extremely proud to have taken a weekend hobby and turned it into a viable business that has thrived for over two decades. We consider ourselves to be pioneers of this vintage evolution.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
We find inspiration in a number of places. We often look to our extensive collection of vintage magazines and books. Most importantly, our foundation is in family. Our history. Our experiences… and a little family therapy doesn’t hurt. Besides that, we can’t reveal all our secrets. 😁
