Hidden Gems: Meet Chinyelu Umeh of Everyday Skin Clinic, NP

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chinyelu Umeh.

Hi Chinyelu, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey started as a Beverly Hills laser registered nurse.

Soon after, I completed my Master’s degree at Cal State, Long Beach as a family nurse practitioner and started to work as a nurse practitioner for a plastic surgery center in Newport Beach, CA while completing my doctorate program. Upon the completion of my Doctorate Degree in advanced nursing practice at Cal State Long Beach, I had the privilege to work at Curology, which is one of the top telemedicine dermatology practices in the United States as a dermatology nurse practitioner for four years. There, I developed my expertise on acne and hyperpigmentation, specifically for women of color.

As a doctor-prepared, board-certified nurse practitioner, I’ve had the personal experience of being burned many times by laser treatments and developing post-treatment hyperpigmentation/discoloration from facial treatment due to a lack of knowledge of treating darker skin tones.

After 9 years as a dermatology family nurse practitioner in the aesthetic industry and personally experiencing negative results, I wanted to create a nursing practice that focused on providing quality, personalized treatments for the everyday woman, especially women of color.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. I started my business two months after having my son. Becoming a business owner while coping with being a new mom was arduous with many sleepless nights. Some of my colleagues couldn’t believe I was starting a business with a newborn. But, I found it to be very therapeutic while I was dealing with postpartum depression at the time. I focused on completing one task a week and four months later, I was up and running. Building my practice truly helped me find myself again. It’s like my second baby. It’s funny because I’ve settled into the groove of being a new mom, but building a successful business feels like being on a never-ending rollercoaster ride. I’m still learning as I go, and I have more and more sleepless nights, but starting my practice was the best decision I’ve made for myself and family.

What matters most to you? Why?
Breaking the stigma of cosmetic enhancement matters the most to me. Some people still feel embarrassed or afraid to undergo a cosmetic treatments. They’ve seen the overly plumped lips or super tight, plastic-looking faces, or been burned or told they cannot do specific treatments due to their darker skin tone. Even though these negative experiences still exist, I’m inspired to provide effective treatments for a natural-looking enhancement for all skin types and ethnicities.

The importance of self-care is an integral part of improving mental and emotional well-being. The best part of my work is receiving messages from my patients telling me about how they now look forward to going to work now that their skin is clearing up, or how they’re smiling more since receiving lip filler, or how they’re wearing less makeup and my favorite story of all…how their getting carder by bartenders when the go out for drinks now.

By tailoring my patient’s treatments to meet their specific facial concerns and setting realistic skin goals, I’ve truly seen improvements in my patient’s self-confidence which can lead to a better quality of life.
