Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Walker.
Hi Taylor, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born in Inglewood, California, but raised in Santa Monica, blending influences from both communities. Growing up, basketball was everything to me; I went on to play at Loyola Marymount University, and right after, I entered LMU’s business school to earn my MBA.
Real estate wasn’t initially on my radar since I didn’t come from a family in the industry. But seeing how many of my more affluent friends’ families had deep ties to it sparked my interest. My mom also fueled that fascination—she would take the long way home from school, driving us through neighborhoods so we could admire the beautiful homes.
One day, I stumbled upon a real estate seminar blocks away, leading me to a group that would become a foundation for my career. With the guidance of a mentor with experience building $15 million homes, I learned the ins and outs of property development and investing. Now, my mom and I are building our own beautiful homes, a journey that started with just a spark of curiosity.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being a young Black real estate investor adds another layer of complexity to an already challenging industry. When I show up to meetings or visit my own properties, I often see the surprise on people’s faces—they don’t expect me to be the owner behind these beautiful homes. Sometimes, people don’t take me seriously at first, assuming that my age or appearance means I’m not the one in charge. It’s frustrating, but it’s also a reality that’s pushed me to prove myself even more.
Managing contractors has been a major hurdle—especially when I’ve had to deal with them stealing money or taking advantage of the situation. Negotiating prices, whether with agents, contractors, or anyone else involved, has required constant attention and strategy. It’s a balancing act of ensuring I get the best deal while still maintaining solid working relationships. On top of that, I’ve faced challenges like neighbors threatening lawsuits over two inches of fence boundaries and dealing with the ups and downs of the market.
These pressures could easily become overwhelming, but each obstacle has reinforced my resilience and taught me the value of perseverance. Success in real estate isn’t just about the properties; it’s about managing people, negotiating deals, and pushing through every challenge with determination.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Being the oldest of three brothers, I was naturally put in a leadership role from a young age. I had to set an example, whether I liked it or not, and that sense of responsibility shaped me. My parents taught me what it meant to lead and be accountable, but I was still stubborn and curious, always testing my limits and getting into trouble here and there. I pushed boundaries, yet my parents kept me grounded, balancing my defiance with structure.
Sports, especially basketball, were a huge outlet for me, fueling my competitive drive and determination. I played just about every sport, but basketball was where I thrived. My brothers looked up to me, so that pushed me even harder to excel and set a standard for them. It wasn’t until the end of high school that I really got my act together, realizing how to use my competitive spirit, curiosity, and drive to build a future. That foundation of leadership, both in my family and in sports, prepared me in ways I’m grateful for today.
