Today we’d like to introduce you to Sergei “Spike” Zyrianov.
Hi Sergei “Spike”, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was around nine years old, I became fascinated with music after watching MTV. Bands like Nirvana, The Prodigy, Soundgarden, Metallica, Queen, and many others completely pulled me in. There was something exciting and almost mysterious about the energy they created. Around that same time, I picked up the guitar, and very quickly it stopped being just an interest and started becoming part of who I was.
I was born in Yekaterinburg, Russia, but my family moved to Nizhnevartovsk when I was six. Later, I returned to Yekaterinburg for a few years before eventually moving to Saint Petersburg. In many ways, all three cities feel like home to me because each one shaped a different chapter of my life and musical identity.
The moment I truly realized music would become something serious happened when I started playing in a band as a teenager. I still remember the feeling after the first few bars of playing together with real drums and bass. Something about hearing everything lock in collectively felt magical. Until then, guitar had mostly been a personal experience, but suddenly music became something alive and shared. That moment stayed with me.
Over the years, I played in bands, toured, recorded music, and eventually founded my own guitar school in Saint Petersburg. Later, I spent several years teaching in Berlin before moving to the United States. My wife and I had always dreamed about living somewhere with warmer weather, access to the ocean, and a strong creative energy. After attending a surf school in Spain around 2016, we started seriously imagining a different lifestyle, and Los Angeles felt like the perfect place to combine music, creativity, and the outdoor lifestyle we loved.
Of course, starting over in a new country was not easy. Moving to Los Angeles meant adapting to a new culture, improving my English, rebuilding professional connections, and finding my place in one of the most competitive music cities in the world. Even after already having years of teaching and performance experience, I realized I needed to rebuild from the ground up. I went back to school while working, earning degrees from Los Angeles City College and later California State University, Los Angeles, where I graduated in Commercial Music–Guitar Performance and was recognized as an Honors Scholar. There were definitely ups and downs. Building a student base, finding gigs, and creating opportunities in a city where nobody knows you takes patience and persistence.
Somewhere along the way, teaching became just as meaningful to me as performing. Interestingly, I discovered this almost by accident after university when I started teaching a few private lessons. At first, I enjoyed the challenge of preparing for lessons, organizing materials, planning assignments, and finding ways to explain ideas clearly. But what really stayed with me was seeing students have those “aha” moments, when something suddenly clicks and confidence replaces frustration. Watching someone realize they are capable of more than they thought is incredibly rewarding.
Today, I run my private teaching studio, Guitar Lab Hollywood, where I teach guitar and bass lessons, create intensive programs and bootcamps, and help students at every level, from complete beginners to advanced musicians preparing for auditions or refining specialized techniques. My philosophy is simple: education should be personalized and purposeful. I think of teaching as creating an intellectual product that should actually fit the student’s goals. If someone wants to learn blues, I want to help them deeply understand and experience blues, not spend years on unnecessary detours that may never matter to them. I focus heavily on understanding how music works, not just memorizing random shapes and patterns.
More than anything, I want my students to experience the same excitement I felt when I first played music with other people. That feeling of joy, discovery, and possibility is what kept me playing all these years, and it’s what I hope inspires others to pick up the guitar with excitement instead of obligation.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it definitely has not been a completely smooth road. One of the biggest challenges was moving to a new country and essentially rebuilding my career from the ground up. Before coming to Los Angeles, I had already established myself as a musician and instructor, but starting over in a new environment meant adapting to a different culture, improving my English, building new professional relationships, and earning trust in a city filled with incredibly talented musicians and teachers.
Like many people in creative industries, there have also been periods of uncertainty: finding gigs, growing a student base, balancing artistic goals with financial realities, and staying motivated through ups and downs. On top of that, I decided to go back to school in the U.S. while working, which was both exciting and challenging. I earned degrees from Los Angeles City College and later Cal State LA, but juggling academics, teaching, and building a business at the same time required a lot of discipline.
That said, I think challenges are part of growth. Every obstacle pushed me to become more adaptable, more organized, and more intentional about what I want to create as a musician and educator. Looking back, even the difficult moments helped shape the path I’m on today.
As you know, we’re big fans of Guitar Lab Hollywood. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Guitar Lab Hollywood is a guitar and bass education studio focused on personalized, goal-oriented music instruction. I work with students of all ages and experience levels, from complete beginners picking up an instrument for the first time to advanced players refining technique, preparing for auditions, performing professionally, or developing their own musical voice.
One thing that sets my approach apart is that I don’t believe in a “one-size-fits-all” curriculum. Every student comes in with different goals, interests, and musical tastes, so I design lessons around where they want to go. If someone loves blues, we dive deeply into blues. If another student wants to master rock, improvisation, songwriting, or prepare for music school auditions, we build a roadmap specifically for that. I like to compare music education to building the right custom vehicle. You should get where you want to go efficiently, rather than spending years learning things you may never actually use.
At the same time, I care deeply about understanding rather than memorization. I want students to understand how music works so they can think independently, solve musical problems, and express themselves creatively instead of simply memorizing patterns on the fretboard. My goal is not just to teach songs or techniques, but to help students become confident, well-rounded musicians.
I’m also very proud that Guitar Lab Hollywood reflects both my background as an educator and as a working musician. Over the years, I’ve taught for nearly two decades, studied at Berklee College of Music, Los Angeles City College, and California State University, Los Angeles, and performed in different countries and musical settings, from rock and jazz to contemporary commercial music. I think students benefit from learning with someone who continues to actively create and perform. Beyond teaching, I also offer guitar maintenance and customization services, including setups, restringing, electronics work, rewiring projects, hardware upgrades, tuner and strap-lock installations, and other practical adjustments that help musicians feel more connected to their instruments. Recently, I also launched a new surf-rock project, The Dune Tones, inspired by authentic 1950s–60s surf music, which keeps me creatively inspired and connected to the performance side of music.
Above all, I want people to know that Guitar Lab Hollywood is meant to be a place where students feel inspired, supported, and excited to learn. I still remember the excitement I felt when I first started playing guitar, and creating that same feeling for others is probably the thing I’m most proud of.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I think luck definitely plays a role in life and business, but I also believe you have to be prepared when opportunities appear. Looking back, I’ve had moments of both good luck and bad luck.
Good luck came in the form of meeting supportive mentors, discovering opportunities in education, and crossing paths with amazing students and musicians over the years. Receiving opportunities to study at places like Berklee, Los Angeles City College, and Cal State LA, as well as finding people who believed in my work, helped shape my path in meaningful ways. Moving to Los Angeles itself also feels like a lucky chapter. My wife and I were looking for a place that combined creativity, great weather, and access to the ocean, and somehow we found a city that aligned with so many of our interests.
At the same time, there have been plenty of challenges and moments of bad luck too. Starting over in a new country, rebuilding a network, competing in a city with an incredibly high concentration of talented musicians, and navigating the unpredictability that comes with creative careers can be difficult. There were times when things moved slower than I hoped or plans didn’t work out the way I imagined.
But if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that consistency matters just as much as luck. Sometimes success is simply continuing to move forward through setbacks, staying open to opportunities, and being ready when the right moment finally arrives.
