Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Rohr.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a licensed Marriage and Family Psychotherapist in the State of California who has been practicing since 2004 working with individuals, couples & families. I graduated cum laude from Mount St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles, California with a Master of Science degree in Counseling Psychology and did my undergraduate studies at the University of San Diego in San Diego, California. My first internship was at Westminster Counseling Center in Pasadena, CA and did my practicum studies at Pasadena Mental Health, Pasadena, CA. After graduating and becoming board certified, I worked as an Outpatient Therapist at Penny Lane Centers, served as Director of Mental Health Services at New Directions for Veterans and Clinical Director at U.S. VETS working with veteran resource centers at community colleges in Los Angeles and Orange County, California with Outside the Wire. I have been featured in the Los Angeles Times, interviewed on T.V.’s “Insider Exclusive”, L.A.’s Talk Radio and hosted former Second Lady Karen Pence discuss veteran mental health and how powerful art therapy can be with individuals and trauma. It was working with veterans that caused me to refocus my work with individuals dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I studied modailities with trauma and became a trauma informed therapist certified in TF-CBT (Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) as well as E.M.D.R. (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) therapy. I also work with Counseling Team International assisting first responders (Police, Firemen and Ambulance Personnel). I now own my own clinic in Pasadena, CA with four associates.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Changing careers later in life requires a great deal of sacrifice, especially if you need to go back to school, which I needed to. When you have a mortgage to pay at 40 and you are enrolled in graduate school, you need to still pay the bills so I waited tables for 6 years to pay the bills.
We’ve been impressed with Matt Rohr & Associates, Psychotherapy, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a psychotherapy office in Pasadena, CA with 4 clinicians offering therapy to teens through retirement. We take most major insurance companies as well as Medi-Cal and specialize working with the military and first responders as well as couples and relational work. We have in-person as well as offer telehealth services to fit the individual needs of the client.
How do you think about luck?
I don’t necessarily believe in luck but rather hard work pays off in the end.
