Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Salem
Hi Matt, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a Los Angeles native, raised in the South Bay area, including Westchester, El Segundo, Manhattan, and Hermosa Beach. For much of my life, I played competitive soccer, and when my playing career concluded, I transitioned into coaching. My passion for fitness has always driven me, with a particular focus on helping others achieve their fullest strength and potential.
About 15 years ago, I decided to expand my impact beyond the world of soccer and into the broader fitness industry. I wanted to reach a wider audience and support more people in their fitness journeys. When I became a trainer, I sought ways to maximize my positive influence, which led me to launch *The Life of Lifting*, my own fitness business offering both in-person and online training.
The early stages of running my business were challenging, as I had to master aspects beyond fitness training—client retention, marketing, sales, time management, and more. As a business owner, I quickly learned that developing these skills was essential to create a sustainable, growing enterprise. As I refined my business acumen, I was able to establish systems that freed up my time, streamlined operations, and created new revenue streams.
With these systems in place, expanding into online fitness training became a natural progression. I developed a 3-month fitness program designed to deliver results at an accessible price point, making it easy for clients to choose to work with me. This program has led to high client satisfaction and retention, and I’m proud to say that today, we’re on track to achieve a quarter-million in revenue by the end of 2024. The time and energy invested in building my expertise and brand have paid off, and I’m incredibly proud of what *The Life of Lifting* has become.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey has been anything but smooth. Building a client base and gaining momentum in the fitness industry proved to be a consistent challenge, and client retention was no less difficult. Finding my strengths as a trainer took time, and I experienced months of high earnings followed by periods of financial struggle. The fitness business is undeniably demanding.
What set me apart, however, was my refusal to give up. Every setback became an opportunity for growth. If I lost clients, I focused on strategies to attract new ones. When word-of-mouth referrals weren’t sufficient, I invested in learning effective marketing techniques. If I struggled to close deals with interested prospects, I sharpened my sales skills.
There were even times when running ads seemed like a dead end—I would spend $500 to $1,000 monthly with no results. But instead of giving in to frustration, I committed to understanding what went wrong. I learned to craft ads that effectively communicated the value of my services, paired with an irresistible price point. Once I mastered this approach, signing clients became a much more predictable and successful process.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
