Exploring Life & Business with Marcus Skeen of WGS Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Skeen. He and his team shared their story with us below:

MARCUS SKEEN

In 1992, Marcus Skeen embarked on his career in Security and Law Enforcement. Over the years, he ventured into Law Enforcement but soon found the bureaucratic nature of government agencies unsuitable. Recognizing the superior advantages of Security Management, Marcus spent the next 12 years working for various corporate entities in Australia and Asia, solidifying his position as a prominent Security Manager in the Asia-Pacific region. Notable roles included a 4-year tenure as the Security Manager for the Hong Kong Sevens. 

In 2014, Marcus returned to Australia, initiating his entrepreneurial journey by acquiring businesses such as BNA Security in North Queensland and ASAP Security in Sydney. His plans for Asian expansion were disrupted by the pandemic. In 2020, Marcus relocated to the USA with the goal of establishing a boutique security business covering major cities nationwide. Purchasing WGS Group Inc. in Las Vegas strategically expanded its reach to Nevada, Northern California, Oregon, Washington, and Texas. 

Since acquiring WGS Group Inc., Marcus has doubled its size and revenue, boasting a team of over 120 Security guards and expanding operations throughout California. In 2023, he opened offices in Beverly Hills and San Diego, with plans to extend into Arizona and Fresno in early 2024. Marcus envisions competing with major security companies while offering superior quality and direct access to the CEO. 

In addition to his professional pursuits, Marcus is a strong supporter of Blue Lives Matter NYC. He has designated this non-profit as a beneficiary of his philanthropic efforts, aiming to give back to the community. Looking ahead to 2024, Marcus has earmarked the expansion of his security business into the markets of New York and Chicago. 

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road in business is never smooth; some days are better than others; you just have to remember on the bad days, tomorrow is always a new day, and as long as you remember that and don’t give up, that is what could be defined as a smooth road. 

Challenges every day in our business are continuing to do better to meet and exceed the client’s expectations.

Established in 2017, WGS Group underwent a change in ownership on June 1, 2022. As a security solutions enterprise, our focus lies in the realm of physical security guards and comprehensive security solutions. Operating as a boutique-style company, we take pride in delivering superior quality services. While we acknowledge that challenges may arise, it is our unique approach to addressing and resolving issues that distinguishes us from competitors. 

A significant aspect of our journey involves a rebranding effort, including the redesign of company logos, which has contributed to the establishment of a robust reputation. Notably, this transformation reflects our commitment to incorporating elements of Australian heritage into our branding, a source of particular pride for our team.

How do you define success?
Setting goals and then yardsticks to achieve those goals is how I define success. Setting up and running a boutique security company that operates nationwide is the goal. When we started, we had operations in Northern California, and in less than 12 months, we expanded to the whole of California the yardstick. That may seem like a success, and it is, but it’s just hitting the yardstick on the way to the goal. While we celebrate hitting the yardsticks, the focus remains firmly on the goal.
