Exploring Life & Business with Kavon Ward of Where Is My Land

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kavon Ward.

Hi Kavon, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started my career as an activist and advocate back in 2009 when I sued the national non-profit organization I lobbied for. I sued them for racial discrimination and retaliation. The 5-year fight was depressing and traumatic, but I leaned on my love of poetry to get me through, as it was my therapy during a time when I could not speak about the specific details of what I was enduring. The culmination of the lawsuit resulted in a financial settlement and changes to racist and discriminatory practices within the organization. That fight emboldened me and gave me a little faith in the justice system. I moved to California to escape as I was experiencing racial battle fatigue. Unbeknownst to me, that fight was just the beginning, a pre-requisite for my fight to get the Bruce family back their land.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road. I experienced challenges with my finances, my safety and my health. I’ve also dealt with betrayal and an immense amount of resistance stemming from white supremacy and jealousy. But all of the obstacles have strengthened my faith and resolve. It has also brought me closer to the most high, the source necessary to guide me as I continue to live out what I believe to be my calling.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Where Is My Land is a movement dedicated to helping Black People discover, search for, identify, and reclaim land taken from us over the past 400 years. We provide assistance to Black families looking to reclaim their land through our technology, research, and advocacy services.

What sets us apart from others is our history-making track record and the fact that we are focusing specifically on Black people in the area of land justice. There is no one else doing this work specifically for Black people despite there being a desperate need to remedy the 90% of over a 19 million acres of land stolen from Black people over the course of a century.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Folks can donate to the cause and sign up to volunteer for us on our website: www.whereismyland.org
