Hi Kate, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello my name is Kate Chavez. I’m a Makeup/Hair Artist and Licensed Esthetician. I have over 10 years of experience in the Beauty industry. I fell in love with art at an early age, thanks to my mom. My mom is the main inspiration for my love of art and makeup. Watching my mom put on makeup was magical for me. I was in awe of my mom and her sense of fashion, style and grace.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Has having a career in the Beauty industry always been a smooth road? No, to be quite honest, it’s hasn’t been a smooth road. I am a first-generation Latina, my parents are from El Salvador and they have always wanted me to have a different profession. I’m the first entrepreneur, the first Makeup Artist and the first one in my family to create my own path. As a Latina and not knowing anyone in the industry, it can be daunting overall to work in this industry, but I haven’t given up. I would like to say that it was an easy choice; that being a makeup artist is not a struggle, but that’s not the truth. I was on a path to become a paralegal, I worked at a law firm in Century City when I was 20 years old. I liked the job and I was good at it, but I knew deep down that it was not my purpose. When I turned 21 I took a leap of faith and made the choice to pursue makeup full time.

I applied to work at my local Sephora, got hired and learned all I could each day on the job. I also applied to be part of Sephora’s Pro Artist Team and was chosen as one of the top 23 finalists in 2011. Sephora gave me my start in the beauty world, but I needed more. I wanted to learn about skin, so in 2018 I became a licensed Esthetician. All of these choices have helped me in my career. Now I have my own beauty business. Kate Chavez Beauty and Skin. I am now seeing the fruits of my labor. I still have some challenging days, but totally worth all the struggles that come with having your own business and being your own boss.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Kate Chavez Beauty and Skin, is a mobile makeup, hair and skin care service provider based in Los Angeles, California. I specialize in Makeup Artistry, Hair Styling and Facial Services. I pride myself in being a skincare therapist. I am known for creating a calm, luxurious and effortless experience for all my clients; whether it’s being on set doing makeup for celebrities or at my client’s homes doing a custom facial. Most of my services are tailored to the specific needs of each of my clients. I do love creating effortless skin finishes for my makeup clients and even doing a facial massage before makeup applications. Making my clients feel valued and cared for is my top priority.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
What was I like growing up? I was a carefree and spirited little girl. I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I come from a big family. I am number 4 out of 5 kids. I’m the youngest daughter. I wore dresses every day. I had Barbie dolls and I loved playing with makeup, taking pictures, going outside and playing with my siblings. I definitely shifted my interests as I got older. I really looked up to my older sisters and wanted to be like them. I would try to dress like my sisters and wear thrifted baggy clothes. I always did really well in school and tried my best to always be an example for my younger brother. I also got into music. I played the violin for four years, sang in my high school choir and took voice lessons thinking I was going to be the next Selena. My interests vary from loving art, film, traveling, reading a good memoir. Overall I would say I’m kind and big-hearted. I love animals. I try my best to help others. I have a great sense of humor and always try to cheer people up. I also love creating memories versus anything else.
