Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Elliott.
Hi Jennifer, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I began my legal career as a legal secretary. Over time, I realized I wanted to do more, so I earned a Certification in Paralegal Studies and then went on to law school. After passing the California bar exam in 2002, I officially became an attorney.
Early on and through some of my own family experiences, I recognized the importance of estate planning and the peace of mind it offers families. Starting in 2005, I focused exclusively on estate planning, probate, and trust administration.
I built my practice with the philosophy of treating each client as a unique individual with distinct needs. I became a Certified Specialist in Probate, Estate and Trust Law, a distinction earned by fewer than 1 percent of attorneys in California.
I also have a background in real estate. Since 1991, first as a salesperson and later as a broker, I have been licensed in real estate, which gives me a deeper understanding of how property and estate law overlap.
My work has never been only transactional. I share what I have learned by teaching continuing education courses for fellow attorneys, writing articles and a book, and hosting seminars to educate the public.
Outside the office, I am involved in the community. I serve as chairwoman of the board of the Chamber of Commerce for my city, I have helped oversee the Beaches, Parks and Recreation Commission, and participate actively with local business and nonprofit groups.
Through all of this, I founded Ocean Estate Law, where my team and I have helped more than 3,500 families plan, protect, and preserve their assets for the future.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it has not always been a smooth road. Like many people starting out in the legal field, I began at the very bottom as a legal secretary, which meant learning the ropes from the ground up. Going back to school for my paralegal certification and then law school while working full time was challenging, but it taught me perseverance and discipline.
Even after becoming an attorney, building a practice from scratch was not easy. There are typical business challenges, including seasonality and the impact of the economy. Focusing exclusively on estate planning, probate, and trust administration meant carving out a niche in a competitive field.
Estate planning is not something most people find fun to do, but it is necessary. A big part of my work is educating clients about the importance of having a properly built and up-to-date estate plan and the risks of putting off these important decisions. Procrastination is one of the biggest challenges in this business, and when people delay planning, the consequences can be heartbreaking. I have seen families go through costly and lengthy probate processes, experience conflict and division, or even end up in litigation.
Earning the Certified Specialist designation and building a practice around this work has required focus and resilience. The challenges along the way have shaped the approach we take at Ocean Estate Law, emphasizing education, proactive planning, and helping families protect both their assets and their relationships.
We’ve been impressed with Ocean Estate Law, P.C., but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Ocean Estate Law is focused on helping individuals and families avoid leaving a mess for their loved ones when they die. We specialize in Living Trust-centered estate plans, which are designed to help our clients avoid the Probate Court whenever possible. While we do handle Probate when necessary, our primary goal is prevention, making sure families have the right planning in place so they can avoid the stress, expense, and delays of court proceedings.
We also work closely with business owners to help them protect both their business and their estate. Most business owners don’t consider how their death or incapacity will impact their business or how their employees will continue to get paid. We help business owners make the transition easy which maximizes the value of the business for the family left behind. Our practice is built around guiding clients through the sometimes complicated process of estate planning in a way that is clear, practical, and tailored to their unique goals. We are known for our client-focused approach, emphasizing education and proactive planning so families can feel confident that their affairs are in order and their loved ones are protected.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
For those who are ready to move forward with getting their estate plan in place, we offer a paid consultation to meet with me, Jennifer Elliott. My team and I prepare for your meeting ahead of time, having obtained the deeds to your property through title records and we have reviewed your prior estate planning documents (if any) in advance of our meeting. During that meeting, I will learn about your goals and circumstances, provide expert guidance and counseling, and quote a flat, fixed fee to move forward with creating your plan. It is entirely up to you whether you wish to proceed, and the process is completely transparent, so you know the cost upfront.
If you have a loved one who has passed away and need help administering a trust or going through Probate, we can also meet with you to provide information about what is required and the anticipated costs to resolve your matter.
We also regularly hold free informational seminars in San Clemente and Laguna Hills where you can learn more about the estate planning process and how Ocean Estate Law can help you leave your assets to your loved ones in an organized manner. People can call our office at 949-420-0070 or visit our website at www.oceanestatelaw.com to register or learn more.
Additionally, if your group, club, or organization would like a private educational legal seminar, that is an option as well. Contact our office to schedule.
