Exploring Life & Business with Frankie Garcés of Good Omen Pictures

Today we’d like to introduce you to Frankie Garcés.

Frankie Garcés

Hi Frankie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The theatre was my home from a very early age. I performed at a local theatre in the Pico neighborhood called The Morgan Wixson Theatre. A lot of people started their young careers there, same as myself, and was blessed to find a second family on stage.

Acting was the profession I knew I wanted since the age of five. More specifically, I wanted to impact people and give them an experience they’d hold deer for a long time. I recall, as a youngster, that actors had a profound effect on society, and my responsibility to be the change I’d like to see in the world manifested back then.

I went on to audition for the prestigious art school, Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA), which took my passion into the professional realm. I was cast in TV shows, short films, and a lot of plays almost immediately entering high school. Musical theatre was initially my calling, but I shifted over into more classical training in Shakespeare and contemporary works like Chekov. Film was definitely on my mind back then, although the pull of Broadway was my main goal at that time.

After training at Cal Art’s “CSSSA” (California State Summer School for the Arts), I knew I had to get to New York. I was accepted to The New School for Drama, their first BFA for Acting, and headed East. The University was a great experience, and I quickly fell in love with New York City. I got to perform on a variety of stages and collaborate with peers whom I’ll cherish for the rest of my life. It’s beautiful to see where our careers have taken us since that freshman year.

While in New York, I was scouted to audition for a one-actor play titled Wheels by Peter Howard. It was an Equity show based in California with a one-year contract. I took that opportunity to head back to the West Coast, not knowing how long I’d be away from my new home in NYC. The play was a massive success, covering 13 characters with different accents and the subject material being very current with politics at the time. It was about a young man, Oscar, trying to get his license at the DMV and meeting people from different cultures with varying views on immigration. During this time, Trump’s rhetoric fueled a need for the show to extend its original contract. I was on tour for roughly eight years, right up until the pandemic.

2020 was a strange time for everyone, and the theatre community felt it greatly. The show was postponed, pending script updates and COVID procedures, and a lot of auditions slowed down while people figured out what was safe to do. I took this time to focus on my spiritual and emotional well-being. There was a lot of growth in that year, and out of all that work, Good Omen Pictures was born. I had always though of creating a production company, but didn’t expect it to come so soon. I was 25 at the time, and having been in the industry for nearly a decade, I had a lot of favors to call in.

Good Omen Pictures produced its first music video and short film within a year of each other. Our music video, Beltnotch! for Fat Possum Record’s CASSOWARY was featured in Hypebeast & The Fader, which helped sell the artist’s debut album. Nose Deep, our debut film, was officially selected for the Micheaux Film Festival and Indie Night Film Fest in 2021 while finding distribution on TubiTV. Since then, we’ve produced a number of narrative and commercial projects with our first national commercial having just wrapped in 2023. We’re excited to keep the momentum going with larger and bolder projects that can have meaningful impact in the world.

These days, I spend a lot of time with my team, developing new films and TV series as well as being of service to our community.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Everything happens as it happens for a reason. Has it been smooth sailing? Of course not, but perspective is everything, and I’ve recognized that without the challenges along the way, I’d not be the man I am today or be able to handle the immense amount of work we do over at Good Omen Pictures.

I’m grateful for the lessons and for the people who have stuck by me in my time of need. I’m blessed to be able to do the same for my team, my friends and family.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Get started. Build systems. Find community. Be easy on yourself.

Starting out can feel very daunting. I’ve been in this business over 15 years and I still find myself at multiple crossroads on some days. Put your best foot forward and focus on what’s in front of you. A good way to organize your thoughts is writing out your plan. Put to paper the steps necessary to get to your goal and follow it passionately. In a few months, you’ll be further along than you’d ever have imagined. In a few years, it’ll blow your mind.

People are essential elements in building anything that lasts. Find someone who is just as excited as you and motivate each other to strive for more. It’s exciting, scary, and a lot of discipline, but if you have someone you trust along the way, the road is a lot more enjoyable. That’s really what it comes down to in the end; enjoying your journey.

You’ll constantly be met with rejection, doubt, and sometimes silence from everyone around you. Don’t put fire into any of it. That’s a sure way to grow into resentment and entitlement. You want to be like water. Let it shape you into a better version of yourself that’s capable of bouncing back in multiple forms until you find the one that suits you. Those who matter will see the change in you before you see it in yourself. So be easy with your spirit.
