Today we’d like to introduce you to Deveon Peppers.
Hi Deveon, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hello, I got started in my coaching journey when I was about 19 working at Admiral Kid park as a sports coach and rec leader.
I coached flag football, basketball, baseball and indoor soccer.
I really always had a love for coaching basketball at the highest level.
I got introduced to coaching AAU basketball during my time living in the Palmdale area where I coached for AVAC united a wonderful program directed by Coach Gary Thomas.
I had the opportunity to coach a 12/13u team for a couple of years where we won’t multiple Championships.
I transitioned back home to Long Beach in 2022/2023 where I became the head coach at BBallers Hoops ran by an amazing program Director in Coach Greg Smith.
He gave me an opportunity to help him build up some young elite hoopers. I currently coach three teams two of them being an elite level team.
I find peace in the gym and coming up with the Xs and Os and the developing portion of basketball.
Seeing and helping these young kids reach their desired goals and heights in this game is what I truly live for and have a heart for.
I am told I coach with so much fire and passion which is one reason I believe these athletes and parents gravitate towards my style of coaching.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wouldn’t say smooth. You definitely deal with a ton of ups and downs in AAU basketball.
You deal with failure and disappointment. Having a weekend in where you play 4-5 games and you play your heart out just to make it to a final and lose it can be heartbreaking especially knowing the type of work you put in.
You deal with a revolving door for many reasons a lot. Kids coming and going sometimes it’s hard to build chemistry when you keep having changes.
Dealing with the different personalities can be a challenge but that is why you have to have a great deal of patience, discipline and boundaries but also have understanding that these kids a lot of the times are going through a lot of changes.
As you know, we’re big fans of BBallers Hoops. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
BBallers Hoops is ran by Coach Greg Smith the program director.
I am the head coach of 11u Supreme, 14u Supreme and 13u Boys development.
I specialize in building team culture and building up individual skill levels.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I am hoping within the next 5-10 years I can transition into Highschool basketball preferreably a prep school and then hopefully transition into the College basketball scene.
