Exploring Life & Business with Courtney Alexander of Secrets & Legacy Media

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Alexander.

Hi Courtney, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Courtney Alexander, and I am a Chicago native, multimedia journalist, and the Founder, CEO, and Publisher of Secrets & Legacy Media. My journey has been shaped by resilience, purpose, and a deep belief in the power of storytelling.
I grew up moving around often and did not come from the most privileged circumstances. While that came with its own challenges, it also became one of my greatest motivators. It pushed me to strive for excellence, dream bigger, and build a future that reflected the life I knew was possible. I truly believe adversity builds character, and many of the obstacles I faced helped shape me into the determined and resilient professional I am today.

I have always had a natural love for storytelling, whether that meant sharing my own experiences or helping others share theirs. That passion led me to pursue journalism and earn my Bachelor of Science in Journalism from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. I began my career at my university’s student newspaper, where I developed the foundation that would guide me throughout my professional journey.

From there, I had the opportunity to work with respected publications such as The AFRO, while also freelancing with The Chicago Defender and Onsite Media. Those experiences were invaluable and helped sharpen my voice as a journalist. I also had the honor of interviewing influential public figures across entertainment, politics, and media, as well as conducting press interviews tied to platforms such as ALLBLK, Fox Soul, BET+, Revolt TV, and the Recording Academy.
My background extends beyond reporting alone. I have worked in roles including news reporter, on-air personality, media host, social media manager, and marketing manager. Those experiences gave me a broader understanding of how storytelling, branding, and audience engagement intersect in today’s media landscape.

While working in corporate America, I quietly began building my own company from the ground up. I self-funded Secrets & Legacy Media, worked long hours, and poured everything I had into creating a platform rooted in truth, culture, and legacy. What began as a vision has grown into a multimedia company dedicated to uplifting voices, telling impactful stories, and creating opportunities within media.

Today, Secrets & Legacy Media continues to grow as a features-focused news platform that highlights changemakers, creatives, entrepreneurs, public figures, and everyday people making a meaningful impact. We are building more than a publication. We are building a trusted brand with national potential, one that can evolve across digital media, strategic partnerships, original programming, and emerging technology.

I am also growing my second media publication, Our Colors Show Media, a platform focused on telling stories surrounding social injustices in the workplace and everyday life. It is a multimedia platform dedicated to amplifying minority voices, lived experiences, and truth through storytelling that challenges harmful narratives and inspires meaningful change.
I am proud of how far the journey has come, but I believe this is only the beginning. My goal is to continue scaling both brands, creating opportunities for others, and helping shape the future of media through storytelling that informs, inspires, and leaves a lasting legacy.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey has not been the smoothest, but everything I have been through has paved the way for who I am today.

I have learned that growth often comes through challenges, and every obstacle I faced helped prepare me for the woman, professional, and entrepreneur I am now.

After graduating from college, one of my biggest struggles was getting someone to believe in my potential and give me an opportunity. I received many rejections early on, which at times felt discouraging, but those experiences taught me perseverance and resilience. Breaking into journalism was not easy, and like many young professionals, I faced uncertainty while trying to establish myself and build stability. Thankfully, opportunities with The AFRO, The Chicago Defender, and Onsite Media helped open important doors for me and sharpen my voice as a storyteller.

Those experiences also shaped how I lead today. Because I know what it feels like to be overlooked as a recent graduate, I am passionate about creating opportunities for emerging talent. Through my own platforms, I want to provide aspiring journalists with a place to learn, grow, and gain real experience while being mentored by trained media professionals.

I also experienced seasons of financial hardship and personal transition that tested my confidence. There were moments when I felt discouraged and unsure of what direction to take, but those seasons ultimately strengthened my faith, resilience, and determination.

Later, while working in marketing, I gained valuable business experience, but I also realized I was in spaces that did not fully align with my purpose. There were difficult days when I felt frustrated and emotionally drained, and at times I would sit in my car during lunch breaks or step away privately to cry and regroup. Deep down, I knew that environment was not aligned with who I was or what I was called to do. That discomfort ultimately became motivation.

Instead of allowing setbacks to define me, I used them as fuel to build my own path. I began self-funding and building Secrets & Legacy Media from the ground up while working long hours and balancing other responsibilities. Today, I am also growing Our Colors Show Media, a platform centered on truth, lived experiences, and social impact.

Looking back, I would not change the road I traveled. The struggles taught me discipline, courage, and how to trust my vision. They also showed me that sometimes the most difficult seasons are the very ones that lead you into your purpose.

As you know, we’re big fans of Secrets & Legacy Media. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I currently lead two growing media platforms, Secrets & Legacy Media and Our Colors Show Media, both rooted in the belief that storytelling has the power to inform, inspire, and create meaningful change.

Secrets & Legacy Media is a Black-owned multimedia company focused on journalism, features, culture, and community-centered storytelling. We are especially known for highlighting prominent and emerging voices within the Black community, including entrepreneurs, entertainers, politicians, creatives, students, and everyday changemakers who are making a real impact. We also provide reliable news coverage with an intentional focus on substance over sensationalism. We are not interested in gossip-driven media or narratives rooted in dysfunction. Our goal is to share stories that are factual, uplifting, productive, and meaningful.

What sets us apart is that we care deeply about both impact and integrity. We believe audiences deserve content that not only captures attention but also adds value. We want readers to leave our platform feeling informed, inspired, and connected to something greater.

I am also building Our Colors Show Media, a platform centered on social awareness, truth, and lived experiences. It focuses on stories involving workplace injustice, everyday inequality, and the realities many marginalized communities face but are often overlooked or dismissed. The mission is to amplify minority voices through storytelling that challenges harmful narratives, sparks conversation, and inspires change.

Together, both brands represent different sides of the same purpose. One celebrates legacy, culture, and achievement, while the other confronts injustice and advocates for truth. That balance is important to me because communities deserve to be seen in their fullness, both their victories and their challenges.

Brand-wise, I am most proud that these platforms were built from vision, faith, and persistence. They were created independently from the ground up with purpose at the center. I am also proud that we are creating opportunities for emerging talent, especially young journalists and creatives who deserve real chances to grow and be mentored.
I want readers to know that these brands are only getting started. My long-term vision is to continue growing nationally through digital media, strategic partnerships, original content, and innovative storytelling. Most importantly, I want people to know their stories matter, and there is power in using your voice.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice for anyone who is just starting out is not to get discouraged by rejection or roadblocks. Keep going, stay focused, and understand that the goal is to work smarter, not just harder. Setbacks do not always mean stop. Sometimes they are simply a redirection.

There may be moments when opportunities do not work out the way you hoped, but that does not mean your journey is over. It may be a sign to apply somewhere else, build stronger connections, improve your skills, or even create something of your own. Sometimes rejection is protection, and it can realign you with the path that is truly meant for you.
I also want to encourage people to chase all of their dreams, no matter how big or small they may seem. If a vision continues to stay on your heart and mind, there is often a reason for that. Keep pushing, stay disciplined, and trust yourself enough to pursue it.

One thing I wish I had known earlier is that there are people who genuinely want to help you grow and reach the next level. Because of that, do not be afraid to ask questions, seek guidance, and build meaningful relationships. The right connection, mentor, or conversation can open doors you never expected.

Most importantly, believe in yourself before anyone else does. Confidence, consistency, and faith can take you further than you realize.
