Exploring Life & Business with Cat Meyer of Head South

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cat Meyer

Hi Cat, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My career began in hair care as a consultant and creative leader, notably launching Hairstory Studio in 2014. By 2021, I was developing my own hair care product line with a business partner, but a series of events ultimately paused the project indefinitely — which, in hindsight, turned out to be a fortunate redirection.

At the time, I was devastated and felt completely blindsided. I retreated to my parents’ house for weeks, unsure of where to turn with my life or career. Though the haircare industry was all I’d ever known, being forced to take a step back helped me realize that my interests were beginning to shift in a different direction towards something new.

Around that time, I was working with a Jungian-oriented psychotherapist and astrologer, who suggested I reflect on my adolescence to identify any passions I might have let go of. Looking back to those years in high school led me to remember the interest I had in sex education and the frustration I’d experienced around it. I thought about returning to school to become a sex therapist or educator, but it didn’t feel like the right fit, since I didn’t want to shift entirely into the academic world.

And then one morning, I woke up from a vivid dream about lubes — I could literally see the bottles being filled! That’s when it hit me: Why walk away from all the expertise I’d gained from working and building brands in hair care? Why not channel it into sexual wellness space instead?

I can’t emphasize enough how trusting my intuition led to the creation of Head South. Since that dream, that pivotal moment, everything has unfolded in the most magical ways.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
We faced the typical challenges of a small business—budget limitations, supply chain issues, and timing delays—but the biggest hurdle for me was seeing my name as ‘Founder’ in the press when we launched. It was overwhelming and filled me with fear and anxiety. As someone who’s always been fairly shy and more comfortable supporting others’ visions, I really struggled to step into this new role.

It was the support of my partner John, along with my family, friends, and advisors, that helped me overcome the crushing self-doubt and imposter syndrome. They acted as mirrors, reflecting back to me the reminders I needed to trust myself and embrace being seen in that light. I am incredibly proud of my achievements as a female, queer, Filipina American entrepreneur, and believe in myself more than ever before. Feeling more connected to this role has allowed me to weather the storms of running and owning a small business with more grace and ease.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

Beyond our products, I’m incredibly proud of the impact we’ve had on our podcast listeners. Head South Radio, our pleasure-positive podcast, features a variety of guests I interview on topics such as pleasure, sexual health, intimacy, and relational well-being. Our goal is to remove the shame and stigma surrounding conversations about sex, and these discussions provide a valuable resource for intimate information, education, entertainment, and insight.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Intuition and trust are the most vital characteristics in this very early stage of brand building for Head South.

From dreaming up this brand to creating the products, producing the podcast, seeing the bottles on store shelves, and hearing the interviews on Spotify—throughout this entire journey, I’ve relied on my intuition as a guiding and grounding force. While business is often expected to be difficult, trying, and exhausting, trusting my intuition has shown me that it can also be easy and deeply fulfilling. By making intuition an integral part of my management style, I’ve found a sense of understanding, purpose, and joy. For that, I am truly grateful.

My intuition led me to relocate to Los Angeles this past year while visiting a friend. I’ve been to LA many times throughout my adult life and even spent five months in Venice for a yoga mentorship in 2017. But after living in New York City and the surrounding areas for 19 years, something about landing in LA this time felt different—it was time to make the move. I heard a clear message that I should live here. I shared this with my partner John, and this past winter, we set out on a road trip from the East Coast to LA, subletting apartments and exploring neighborhoods, planning to move in 2025.

After just a month in LA, however, there was no going back. I was quickly and warmly welcomed into the sexual wellness community here. In fact, I’m having this interview thanks to Hannah, the co-founder of Personal Fav—technically a competitor, but more importantly, one of my favorite new LA friends. My decision to stay in LA rather than return to New York was driven by what felt right for me and my brand. Though I’m now navigating a long-distance relationship, I know it’s temporary, and I have the full support of my partner in pursuing this path. I truly feel that both my business and I are thriving here in Los Angeles

The people I’ve had the opportunity to meet and reconnect with here have quickly become a strong network and community that I rely on for support. I now have a business partner based in Venice, a collaboration that wouldn’t have even been possible, let alone nurtured, if I hadn’t made the move to LA.

Building a quality team and support network is essential to brand success. I have a small but mighty crew, and while I don’t currently have full-time staff, I work with 5-7 consultants with whom I’ve built long-standing, collaborative relationships. Their belief in Head South, in me, and our mission constantly motivates and inspires me, and I place my full trust, respect, and confidence in them. Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of learning from incredible mentors who taught me how to build talented, passionate teams that create strong, purposeful, and impactful brands.
