Today we’d like to introduce you to Brett Hartong.

Brett, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hello, I’m Brett Hartong, an Orange County-based Filmmaker with a lifelong passion for storytelling. From a young age, I was captivated by the magic of cinema; a spark ignited when I watched Jurassic Park at the two-dollar theatre in Seal Beach at the age of six. That moment set me on a path destined for the film industry. Starting as an actor, I quickly found my true calling behind the camera, falling in love with production and the creative energy of the set. 

My journey led me to many late nights in Hollywood, working on music videos with talented artists such as Teddy Geiger, Ashley Parker Angel, and even The Veronicas. Concurrently, my band Uhoh! Explosion was signed, propelling us onto a thrilling tour. 

I pursued my passion for filmmaking at California State University, Long Beach, where I earned a BFA with a focus on directing documentaries. Since then, I’ve worked as a film editor, crafting compelling narratives for ESPN commercials, short documentaries, and online businesses. 

With over 100 weddings captured, I take pride in pioneering the Wedding Documentary Film style. However, my most rewarding role to date is as a High School Arts, Media, and Entertainment teacher at Villa Park High School. Guiding and inspiring the next generation of artists has transformed my life, fostering gratitude for every experience and person who has shaped my journey. 

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey to find my identity and sense of belonging has been a significant struggle in my life. While I don’t claim to have everything figured out, I do know what I want, and I’m determined to pursue it. Over the years, I’ve come to understand my purpose and the positive impact I can have on my friends, family, and community. 

In my twenties, I felt pulled in many directions, a jack of all trades but a master of none. I juggled auditions, late-night music gigs, community college classes, and shifts at Mels Diner. However, it was when I purchased my first Canon DSLR camera that I truly found my calling. With that camera in hand, I began to see the world through a different lens, developing my unique perspective. 

Photography became my voice, and editing became my canvas. I became a fly on the wall capturing moments and events that seemed impossible before.

What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I have learned to be honest. After coming out in my early twenties, I have been able to live an honest and happy life. It doesn’t matter what you do, as long as you do it honestly. Put all your thoughts and hard work out into the universe and chase that goal, kiss that guy, buy that car, read that book, make that movie, and enjoy the journey. Don’t forget to treat yourself.
