Today we’d like to introduce you to Janna Ross.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
After working in retail display and visual merchandising for many years, I pivoted to interior design founding Canyon Interiors in 2018. It felt like a natural evolution from managing store renovations and new retail builds for Marc Jacobs. I have always been passionate about creating harmonious spaces whether for a business or a home so this was a fluid evolution. Making the move to Los Angeles in 2017 from New York City also was an impetus to rethink my work life balance and priorities.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I have always felt most comfortable in structured, corporate roles so transitioning to being a small business owner was a big mental shift. I think when you work for others, especially in a large company, there are so many layers of approval and external validation. Not having that feedback loop has improved my sense of self and confidence in my work.
We’ve been impressed with Canyon Interiors, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Canyon Interiors is an interior design firm specializing in both residential and commercial projects, while also offering services in retail visual merchandising. The company name is inspired by the diverse canyon landscapes that intersect this dynamic city that is Los Angeles. My ever enduring aesthetic goal is to bring the tranquility of the natural world inside. As a firm we gravitate towards minimalism, mixing complementary styles, materials and textures so that the overall feel is never cold or derivative. My background in Environmental Sustainability informs our commitment to making eco-conscious design decisions whenever possible. We are fortunate to work with a network of incredible partners with whom we collaborate with for custom commissions, art curation, construction and more.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I see two trends in interior design that I think were once niche and aspirational that now feel gravely unoriginal. One being the super minimal, sterile environment especially as it relates to residential spaces. As we have seen, especially in the last few years, having a comfortable home that is a retreat from the outside world is paramount. To me, minimal means intentional and is a thoughtful reflection of either an individual or brand’s style, not a carbon copy of a current trend. I also see a shift away from the bohemian, California casual look that has become so popular across the country to a more formal approach.
