Dan Ubick of Topanga Canyon on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Dan Ubick and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Dan, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Thanks for having me! Most days I’m up around 8am but definitely need coffee and some time to actually wake up. Before too long my wife or I walk the dog and/or exercise. After a shower and a second cup of coffee I am energized and most days have music production work to do or am sorting records for upcoming DJ gigs until later afternoon when I teach lessons (guitar, bass, drums, beginning piano & Ukulele).

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Dan Ubick and I have been playing musical instruments and been obsessed with music and records since I was about 15 years old. I played in many bands over the years from local groups that took off like Breakestra, The Lions, Night Owls and Rhythm Roots All Stars and have also been blessed to play with legendary artists like De La Soul, Macy Gray, Snoop Dogg, The Heptones, Hollie Cook and many others. Over the last 15-20 years though my focus has been on producing and writing music. My music has been used in everything from TV shows like Sesame Street, Friday Night Lights, House MD, Black-ish, Southbound & Down, Breaking Bad, 24 and a new one that’s about to air called Black Rabbit, films like Oceans 8, This Means War, Young Adult, Ruby Sparks & Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World, video games like DJ Hero & Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 and advertising campaigns for Addidas, Vans, Hoka, Lincoln Navigator & Apple iPhone.

My goal over the next few years though is to score more and more films. I helped a good friend produce a score for a documentary film that should be out soon and had so much fun creating the vibe for each scene and hiring all my talented friends to help us create something very unique and soulful for this beautiful film about some amazing women. More of that please universe! 🙂

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
I’ve been lucky to have a long list of inspiring people in my life to show me that being accountable, respectful, a good listener, hard working and sympathetic lead to good work and relationships that you can count on. My parents first off, of course, but my oldest sister Chris and her husband Tim, my wife Kelly and many of my friends parents that I was lucky enough to come up around were all amazing examples of how to do what you love and take pride in what you accomplish.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Being “cool” isn’t what’s important and attractive, being interested in things you love and being kind to people is.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
There are so many amazing people out there but for today I’ll say Bob Marley. I love his quote; “”Possessions make you rich? I don’t have that type of richness. My richness is life, forever,” Leaving a legacy of love, sympathy, generosity and art that gives people hope for eternity is the pinnacle of success to me.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
Hopefully my unique take on creating and curating music. I’ve seldom been one to try and immitate or re-create something that’s already been done. I like fresh perspectives and new collages of ideas and/or sounds that produces something beautiful, uncommon and inspiring.
