Daily Inspiration: Meet Yasemen Asad

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yasemen Asad.

Yasemen, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started painting in 2014, I was going thru big changes in my life like a divorce with my ex and lost my job, and decided to take painting classes just out of curiosity, which I never knew could determine the rest of my life. I learned painting really quickly like in a few months, I mastered oil painting and could copy and paint old masterpieces which is part of the learning process. But I wanted to experiment and play with other mediums as well and was always astonished by contemporary artists and the way they play with color combinations and mediums. My favorite artists of that time were Michael Folkers, Bernard Buffet, and Emil Aziz, I was consistently checking out new exhibitions and art galleries and learning the techniques of modern masters because seeing the artworks in person is way different from seeing them on TV or on social media, you get so consumed and amazed by the painting, the colors talent of an artist it is beyond imagination. Later on, I did my first exhibition in Baku back in 2016 I think it was a great success, and I was determined to go further, my next destination was Lis Angeles.

I moved to the US in August 2016 and started focusing on my art career more seriously. I paid lots of attention to selling online which is saving a lot of time and I suppose it is absolute best option for me. But I also decided to get out of comfort zone and started participating in National Art Shows, like Art Basel in Miami, Art San Diego, Beverly Hills Art Show, etc. I am glad I did go thru all that experience it helped me to gain lots of collectors, meet other artists and learn from them and it was great for networking. Honestly, since covid online sales have skyrocketed that is why I am focusing a lot on posting online on online galleries because it helps me to sell a lot. Using the right keywords and painting the favorite celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, Kurt Cobain and Freddy Mercury which are my best sellers is crucial. At the same time, I sell a lot of landscapes and vintage Volkswagen paintings. So I am focusing more on selling online.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Art business is not easy you can not just paint and wait for someone finally buy your artwork, you need to be more of an entrepreneur, learning digital marketing tricks using the right keywords for helping your artwork to come up on the first pages of Google search when people are looking for this or that artwork. And trying to go viral on social media could help as well, main thing is having followings, collectors and admirers of your works and increasing their number. These people will follow your art career and collect your works.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a contemporary pop artist based in Los Angeles. I mainly paint portraits of Hollywood icons and rockstars like: Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Taylor Hawkins, Frida Kahlo, Kate Moss, Tupac, Amy Winehouse, Madonna, Pamela Anderson, etc. I am absolutely proud of my accomplishments as an artist and that I have my loyal collectors who admire and keep buying and collecting my works, it means that I am on the right track that – the people feel connected when they see my works portraying their favorite celebrities. Because that is the main goal for artists.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
First of all, get out of your comfort zone and grow. Secondly, the more you do and the faster you do, the more you achieve. There is no easy way! Keep hustling, keep working and keep learning because hard work always pays off!
