Daily Inspiration: Meet Valerie Campos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Valerie Campos.

Hi Valerie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m a self- taught artist born in Mexico City. I grew up in L.A. I began painting at the age of 22 years when I moved to Oaxaca City. I work with painting and photography.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
At the beginning of my career, I was not selling my work and those were difficult years that taught me to develop confidence and resilience. Five years later, I won several international grants and scholarships abroad and they quickly opened the door to my work in the art market. In those years, I became interested in cultural management and decided to take a risk by developing a cultural exchange project between Mexico, China and the United States.

Now I’m the founder of a non-profit civil association that produces short-format documentary series to disseminate, promote and open dialogues on contemporary art in Mexico.

Vaiven Collectors support Mexican artists, interspersing spaces for painting, sculpture, graphics, photography, installation, alternative media, architecture, dance, music, literature, theater. Artists whose work encourages critical thinking in relation to balance and change as a structural constant in their proposal.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a visual artist who works on painting and photography mainly… My painting moves from abstraction to figuration constantly as a process of reduction between both poles. I see my work as an evocation of physical instability, fragility and transfiguration.

What are your plans for the future?
I’m working on a new show and hopefully, we’ll see it soon in La.

I’m also deeply committed to support Mexican artists and to promote the art scene in Mexico internationally through Vaivén Collectors.
