Today we’d like to introduce you to Thane Koi.
Hi Thane, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started modeling at the age of 11, and later expanded into fashion styling when I was 23. When I was 12 years old, I appeared in an ASL commercial for Disney Parks, which helped launch the career of Thane Koi — an artist who represents creativity and visibility beyond disability, showing that being deaf is simply one part of who I am, not a limitation. Growing up, I also had the opportunity to dance as a background performer for artists like Jennifer Lopez and Kelly Rowland, along with others. Those experiences strengthened my passion for performance and helped me develop my talents in dance and entertainment. I also explored acting through background roles, which gave me a deeper understanding of the industry.
All of these experiences shaped who I am today. I’m proud of the journey and the milestones along the way, and now I’ve returned to my first love — fashion — continuing to evolve as an artist and creative in the industry.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. There were plenty of casting directors who doubted me because of my impairment — but honestly, that just made me show out even harder. I’ve always walked into a room as my full, authentic self, and more often than not the same people who doubted me ended up loving me. Growing up in this industry, I dealt with my share of obstacles. I’ve been hurt, underestimated, and even taken advantage of at times. But one thing about me, I stand ten toes down. I stayed strong, kept pushing, and never watered myself down to make anyone else comfortable. Now I’m here, unapologetic, fearless, and exactly who I said I was going to be. Thane Koi. In the Fashion and Entertainment industry, confidence is everything — and baby, I came READY with the whole package. Period. Lol
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a fashion stylist/artist who dabbles in multiple talents such as acting, dancing, and music. I’m known for branching out in the industry as a Deaf model. I actually kicked the door down in six-inch heels on my first Fashion Show for ALAKAZIA, rest in peace. People tried to put me in a box, so I turned it into my runway. Being Deaf or Nonbinary never made me less powerful; if anything, it made the room louder when I walk in. I’m known for my Gaudy fashion and setting trends. I know I have always been different from others since at a young age, Some people follow trends, but when I step in, the trend follows me. After 21 years of blood, sweat, and tears, this isn’t luck — it’s legacy. I didn’t ask the industry for a seat at the table either; I built my own throne. My fashion is loud, my attitude is louder, and my presence speaks for itself. I’m not trying to fit in — icons never do. I’m also proud of my new upcoming project, “Thane Season” which is coming out this summer. So stay tuned for that.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Being authentic always. Be all the way true to yourself because if you can’t, it will definitely show in your success and how you perceive success will reflect who you are.
