Today we’d like to introduce you to Selorm Kploanyi.
Hi Selorm, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a kid, I was always drawn to anything creative. I started out making music, playing guitar, and posting videos of myself singing online. But I didn’t really dive into social media or video production until high school, when I took a media class that was being offered for the first time. I was in charge of the school’s morning announcements, which I loved because it reminded me of MTV interview shows. I had a lot of fun with it, but I didn’t think it could ever become a real career.
At graduation, they were giving out awards for things like best grades or best attendance. I had made peace with the fact that I wasn’t getting one, until they called my name for a digital media award, which my media teacher had submitted me for. That was the first time I realized I might actually have a future in production.
I went on to work for my college’s news station all four years. After graduating and trying to figure out what kind of career I’d actually enjoy, I kept thinking back to how much I loved that work. I started applying for jobs in social media and production and landed an internship at BuzzFeed, which eventually turned into a career as a producer and on-camera personality across several of their channels. I spent years creating some of the internet’s most viral videos, back when being a content creator was still a pretty new concept.
Eventually, I wanted to keep exploring and expanding my skills. I worked as a producer for The Kelly Clarkson Show, but after years of helping other pages go viral, I realized it was time to build momentum for my own brand. I began focusing more on my personal platforms while also branching into acting, which led to a role in the Apple TV series The Changeling
On my own social media platforms, I create content that empowers, entertains, and builds community. I share my natural hair journey to help others feel more confident embracing their curls, and I inspire people to explore the world by documenting my travels. I also use humor to spark connection through videos like my series Things Black People Don’t Do, which highlights Black people in underrepresented spaces. Everything I’ve learned throughout my career has brought me to this moment where I’m excited to keep growing, connect with others in meaningful ways, and create space for endless opportunities ahead.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I knew from a young age that my goal of being on camera wouldn’t be easy. As a kid I went on countless auditions for theater, film, and musicals, but I quickly grew discouraged. Many of the roles available to Black actors felt inauthentic or steeped in stereotypes. Still, I saw how the internet was beginning to create new spaces for more diverse and honest storytelling. People like Issa Rae turning a web series into an empire showed me that it was possible. That inspired me to keep going.
In my early days in California, I would commute sometimes over two hours by bus to get to work and starting over in a new city, with no network and community was trying. I’ve probably had millions of auditions, interviews, and submissions that went nowhere. But I’m always grateful for the ones that did, because despite the rejections and the setbacks, I can look back and see just how far I’ve come.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m known for my work as a content creator, producer and actress. I’m most proud of the work I’ve created that highlights important topics and concerns within the Black community. This includes my series Things Black People Don’t Do, as well as my current content that encourages people to embrace their natural and textured hair. I’m also proud of the creative boundaries I’ve pushed by blending comedy, music, and storytelling into my feed without feeling confined to one niche. For me, success has always meant staying authentic and creating space to express all parts of who I am.
What’s next?
Looking ahead, I want to continue building community for those who feel uplifted by my content both online and in real life. I’m passionate about finding new ways to help people feel confident enough to travel, explore the world, and fully embrace who they are, both inside and out.
I’m also excited to translate the comedy I’ve developed online into more mainstream spaces through acting, writing, and eventually showrunning.
