Daily Inspiration: Meet Sean Alan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Alan.

Hi Sean, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
bands mostly. It’s a lot of work, and not very profitable… I think any sane individual in my shoes would have probably found something else to pursue by now, but I just can’t stop. Music continues to be a source of endless fascination and possibility—the joy of writing a new song, of fleshing it out with the band, of performing it live, of recording it, mixing it and manifesting it as a finished piece of art. Nothing is more appealing to me. And I believe I am continuously getting better at it all the time. My latest project, The Blurry Stars, has been the focus of my attention for the last 2 years. The sound is one inspired by the punk/classic/and 90’s rock that got me excited about music when I was a kid. It has been fun working in this medium—loud, bombastic, high-energy short songs without a lot of pretention or self-indulgence. I enjoy bringing the skills I have developed over the years to this deceptively simple format, and putting what I believe to be a novel spin on a classic sound.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
So many times I have invested time, money and hopes into projects that fell flat, into bands that fell apart, into albums no one listened to, into videos no one watched, into gigs no one attended. Friends, family members, industry gatekeepers, playlisters, and countless other people have expressed, directly and indirectly, that they don’t think I have what it takes. In addition to these external obstacles, self-doubt, fear, frustration, self-loathing and despair have been frequent companions of mine on this journey. I have also had to fund and find time to do art while raising 3 children.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At my core I am a lyricist and songwriter—I love unique chord progressions, and framing melodies harmonically in ways that surprise and enhance what is happening. I think the words are important. Sometimes I spend a great deal of time on them, though there is sometimes value in not overthinking, but just letting the song become what it is meant to be. I think I am best known for being a good songwriter, and I am proud of the songs I’ve written. In doing this for so long, I have learned to wear other hats too. I believe I’ve become a pretty good guitarist at this point. I also produce and mix my own stuff. I have begun to master my work as well. I do the band’s graphic design and I edit all our videos. I’m still working on my stage presence and performance.
