Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca.
Hi Rebecca, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
The idea for LA Fright Club started during quarantine when I was in my last semester at Cal State Northridge. Before the lockdown happened I had just joined a gym and became quite consistent. Throughout my life I have always been pretty active. I played volleyball and soccer in High school and then I joined bootcamp type classes once I was out of high school. And I’ve always enjoyed going on hikes. Hiking was something I did with my family from a young age. I was excited to finally join a gym and then they ended up closing for the pandemic. During this time I began doing at home workouts and started hosting fitness classes with my college Club Hermanas Unidas, Inc. I would host different themed classes where we would wear t shits based on the theme and I would use music that correlated to that theme. I have always been into horror and Halloween my whole life and so many of the workout themes incorporated that. I tried to search for any brands that combined horror and fitness and realized there were none that were marketed as spooky fitness all year round. So i decided to make my own. I began researching how to create a clothing brand and what steps I would need to take to achieve this. I wasn’t sure if it would be successful or not but I wanted to give it a shot. I launched in October 2021 and never looked back. I want people in the alt and spooky world to feel comfortable when stepping into any sort of fitness world whether it’s, lifting, boxing, or Pilates. In 2025 I launched my very own Spooky Hike Club. I had attended many run clubs and just didn’t enjoy running as much as I did hiking. I would go hiking pretty often and one day said hey I have grown a following within the brand, how cool would it be to meetup with some of the people that support the brand on a hike. A hike felt more welcoming as in anyone could join whether they are beginners or not. I also made it kid and dog friendly. The first few meetups didn’t have a big turnout but I had fun either way with the people that did show up. I started thinking of places that had any sort of spooky or haunted stories attached to their history and we would hike there. Then I decided to do the hike located at Spahn Ranch in Chatsworth. That’s the hike that really blew up! We had over 100 people show up, it was amazing. And from then on I have continued to host the hikes once a month with a regularly large crowd. We have done hikes in the Los Angels, Inland Empire, Malibu, and the San Fernando Valley. At every hike I have The Black Veil Coffee serving up amazing drinks before and after the hike. I play goth and emo music before the hike starts. I as well always sell my own merch at the with a special discount you only get at the hikes. For our 1 year anniversary we also had smash burgers being sold by Bun Boy Burgers. The hike club has become something I look forward to every month. I always wanted to make it a welcoming place for everyone. I have people telling me they have never been on a hike before and now they come every month. People who show up alone always make a buddy along the way and It makes me so happy to have a space for the alt and spooky community to be themselves while getting fit! I can’t wait to see where it goes from here.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. There have been a lot of trial and error along the way. Especially when it comes to creating the clothes. Everything I make is made at home. With the help of my mom & aunt we screen print every item and we heat press every item. That process wasn’t easy. We had to learn how to screen print all on our own. In the beginning we didn’t know what worked and didn’t work for us so we lost inventory and made mistakes at first. I was determined to make all the pieces myself at home so we eventually figured it out and are a smooth working system now. Another aspect to this was created a social media presence to get my work out there. That took time and being consistent. I started doing vendor markets which really helped but again it took time to find out what markets worked best for me and it really is a gamble sometimes of whether you make profit. I’m naturally a shy person and public speaking was never something I enjoyed so In having my business it really pushed to get out of my comfort zone. After having the business for this long it has now made me more confident in my abilities.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m known for being one of the first brands to combine horror and fitness in a clothing brand. I started with focusing on gym related designs and have now branched out to other sports. I now have expanded to include designs about boxing, hiking, running, and Pilates. I think what sets me apart from other’s is that the characters in my clothing line are custom made. What I’m most proud of is seeing the community gain confidence in the fitness world by wearing one of my pieces, and hearing the feedback that they feel seen. Many have said that buying the merch motivates them to start exercising and it makes me proud to be a small part in their fitness journey.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
Throughout this process I have always had the support of my family. My mom and aunt have been there with me from the beginning. They help me in making the clothing as well as working every vending event I do. My husband has been a big supporter as well and always willing to listen to all my crazy ideas. My grandparents as well have been supportive since day one. I have met many small business owners along the way that have generously shared their experience and business advice that I am forever grateful for.
