Today we’d like to introduce you to Pamela De Freitas.
Hi Pamela, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I graduated as an architect in mexico in 2019 and moved to LA four years ago. started as an architect working for great firms like mark haddawy. Along the way i realized that i needed a change of speed and that my heart and the city called for a different route so I started doing volunteer work as a production designer / scenic / set designer and all roles in the Art department. I believe my story is very inspirational not only for immigrants but for women as both these industries are very male driven and women’s voices tend to also be overlooked. My story presents challenges but also a big dream and how the barriers that society creates for women and immigrants can
become a construct that is only strong enough to stop us if we believe it can. when we believe in ourselves and stand up for our dreams a whole different reality becomes available for us.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
like i mentioned before not only both industries are male driven but also not very immigrant friendly for lead roles. it’s a combination society and the government making it hard for women and immigrants.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a production designer and set designer with an architectural background who moved to LA from Mexico. I’ve paved my own path based on self belief and have gotten to work on several recognized projects not only in architecture — the renovation of homes like Elrod House by John Lautner — but as a scenic for grammy award winning artists like Tyla, editorial work and art department for Who what wear with elle fanning, the debut of Cameron Monaghan as a director for Foxbody and also production designer for the directorial debut of Liana Liberato and Brianne Tju’s film Dead friends; among many other projects for companies like Blizzard entertainment like World of Warcraft / Stonehearth among others and now an upcoming project with netflix.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
the world is as big as your dreams. you’re as capable as you believe you are.
