Daily Inspiration: Meet Nicholas Schmid

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicholas Schmid.

Hi Nicholas, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in Toronto, Canada, splitting my time between camping, skiing, and the grocery store. I started out writing short stories while working on my novel. A few years later, I applied to the American Film Institute Conservatory’s MFA in Screenwriting and somehow was accepted. Booked a flight, and now I’ve been in LA almost two years.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been agonizingly tough adjusting to the lack of winter. I can go outside in January without wearing three coats? Ugh.

I also don’t understand Fahrenheit. Like actually, it makes no sense.

And miles instead of kilometres? Honestly, it keeps me up at night.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a screenwriter who focuses on writing political dramas or satires. Coming from a Political Science BA, I try to bring out some political discussion in my writing, though never at the expense of entertainment. After all, people don’t go to the movies to learn about the neoliberal ramifications of trade agreements.

I’m proud to have written ‘neoliberal ramifications’ in a magazine article.

What sets me apart from others? That I wrote ‘neoliberal ramifications’ in a magazine article. But please don’t ask me if I actually remember what they are.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was the skinny kid who read lots of books, but still managed to play on all the sports teams. Puberty didn’t hit me until unfortunately late in high school, and it when it did, it struck like a runaway freight train. Playing sports got tougher then, and I read even more books.
