Daily Inspiration: Meet Muling Shi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Muling Shi

Hi Muling, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hey there! I’m Muling Shi, a multimedia motion designer from the vibrant city of Chengdu, China. My creative journey started with a love for visual storytelling, which led me to UCLA, where I earned my BFA in Design Media Art in 2021. These days, I’m all about motion graphics and motion design as an MFA animation student at USC.
When I’m not busy crafting dynamic visuals, you might find me celebrating my 100% perfection achievement in Stardew Valley! I’m always looking for new ways to blend art and medium in exciting projects.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s definitely been a bumpy ride! Being a creative has its challenges, and there are moments when it can drive you a bit crazy, whether it’s in personal projects or commercial work. One of the biggest struggles is the constant self-doubt that seems to follow you around—there’s always that nagging feeling that your work could be better, that it’s never quite flawless. This can lead to countless late nights spent questioning and pushing yourself to improve.

Another significant challenge has been finding the courage to speak up and represent my own voice in the industry. It’s not easy to put yourself out there and advocate for your ideas, especially in a field where everyone is so talented and opinions can be strong. But these struggles have also been the push I needed to grow, both as a designer and as a person.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a multimedia motion designer with a passion for creating dynamic visuals that tell compelling stories. My work primarily focuses on motion graphics and motion design, where I blend animation, design, and technology to bring ideas to life. Whether it’s for commercials, interactive experiences, or VR/AR projects, I aim to craft visuals that are not just visually striking but also emotionally resonant.

What sets me apart is my ability to merge technical expertise with a strong narrative sense. I’m not just about making things look cool—I’m driven by the story behind each project and how I can convey that through motion.

What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is the ability to tell stories that resonate with people on an emotional level while also creating motion that is fun and exciting. Whether through motion graphics, animation, or interactive design, I’m driven by the idea that my work can connect with others, spark a feeling, or inspire a new perspective.

Why? Because I believe that at the core of every creative endeavor is the desire to communicate something meaningful. Art and design are powerful tools that can transcend language and cultural barriers, and being able to use those tools to evoke emotion, provoke thought, and inject a sense of joy and excitement into the experience is incredibly fulfilling to me. It’s what keeps me pushing forward,.
