Lisza, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
California HandyGirl may have officially launched in 2014 in Beverly Hills, but its roots stretch back much further. Founder Lisza Darling grew up learning her way around a toolbox, working alongside her dad, a former US Army aircraft mechanic. From high school days spent fixing things around the house to managing large-scale renovations in multi-family housing and hotels, Lisza’s experience spans film set design, property management maintenance, and a world of DIY projects.

What truly sets California HandyGirl apart is our powerhouse, all-female crew. Each of our team members brings their own unique expertise and story. Elsa, our roofing and drywall guru, has a knack for refinishing, TV mounting, and more- there’s nothing she can’t do. Stevie, with her background in set building, knows the ins and outs of theater environments like no one else. And then there’s LaQuesha—better known as Q—whose skills in carpentry, construction, and security make her indispensable on every job site.

Together, we proudly serve the Greater Los Angeles area, combining our talents and experiences to take on any handy project that comes our way.

With our interior design services, we create interiors and spaces that embody your attitude and style. We provide design and space planning to make the most of your space by curating unique, sometimes gently used pieces that speak to your aesthetic while keeping you on budget. We capture the vibes of your space with beautiful photography to showcase in our projects. We are Earth~friendly and cruelty~free with our design concepts. We provide in-house repairs and installation services that will make your windows, walls, and furnishings come to life, leaving you with that one-of-a-kind feeling that says, “It feels good to be home.”

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The first year of any business is tough, and California HandyGirl was no exception. Lisza was balancing a full-time job while trying to get her business off the ground. But about six months in, things started to shift—more clients were reaching out, and slowly but surely, California HandyGirl began to take off. The next eight years were a whirlwind of success. Lisza ran the business solo, with her schedule booked solid three weeks in advance, sometimes having to turn down projects because there just weren’t enough hours in the day.

By 2020, however, burnout had crept in. When the pandemic hit, Lisza made the tough decision to step back and hit pause. She left Los Angeles and moved to Austin for a year, taking the time she needed to reset and recharge. In 2021, feeling refreshed and inspired, Lisza returned to L.A. And in 2024, California HandyGirl was re-launched—this time with a new spark and an incredible crew of talented women ready to take on the next chapter.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Creativity has always been at the core of who Lisza is. Design isn’t just her passion—it’s her mantra. With a background that spans interior design, graphic arts, and web design, Lisza thrives on any opportunity to create something beautiful. Her expertise lies in aesthetics, branding, and space planning, but what truly sets her apart is her marketing experience. This rare combination allows her to bring an edge that many in her field can’t offer.

For Lisza, design is more than just making a space look good—it’s about making it a reflection of the person who lives there. She believes a well-designed space should tell your story and represent your personal brand without needing a single word. Her proudest moments? They come when clients see the finished project, their faces lighting up in awe at the transformation, far exceeding what they imagined possible.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
When asked what has been the key to my success, Lisza would have to say it’s being genuine with her clients in every aspect of the service that she provides. From the first conversation to the final touches on a project, Lisza makes it a point to be transparent, honest, and truly listen to their needs. It’s about building trust and showing that she cares as much about their vision as they do. This authenticity has helped Lisza form lasting relationships with clients who know that when they work with her, they’re getting her full commitment and heart in every detail.
