Daily Inspiration: Meet LAWRENCE Murphy

Today we’d like to introduce you to LAWRENCE Murphy.

Hi LAWRENCE, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am and have been focused on personal fitness, training and coaching for the past 10 year while also working in the entertainment business on a wide range of shows including TV roles , movie appearances and music video performances. Looking the best that you can while staying healthy should be part of everyone’s mantra.

For as long as I can remember, my passion has been health and fitness as far back as high school and has grown with me into adulthood. I have recently launched a website www.lawrencemurphyfitness.com and am in the process of creating a fitness app so that others can benefit from my personal experience and journey. I can offer each client the opportunity to get fit and stay fit.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There are a lot of moving pieces to starting a business, apart from the foundational content knowledge. That knowledge usually is the idea and know how behind the subject of the business that is being created. But other facets such as the strategy, marketing, sales aspects, legal & financial aspects all come into play and impact success of any business. The importance of reliable & trustworthy partners in all those aspects cannot be overstated. Not everybody has the same standards/ principles that I do.

I had to learn a little less upfront trust, a lot less assumptions and a lot more questioning and negotiating when choosing who to work with and what the expected outcomes would be. I once hired a videographer who was very eager, personable and showed me his work, which seemed adequate. Only to find out that he was very inexperienced and unreliable. I had to set up every shot for lighting and position, and hence shooting was laborious and did not yield the quality expected, nor within the time that was promised. Additionally, he did not have the necessary camera equipment. The breakpoint came when he informed me that his lost his luggage and his laptop was inside his luggage, and the videos were on his lost laptop . This reeked of the excise ” the dog ate my homework”. My lessons: be more discriminating when entering any agreement; set milestones for payment, really investigate prior work products.

Bottom line- I was able to regroup without too many delays but did incur additional costs.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
To me, strategic planning is the most helpful skill to ensure business success. Simply stated, strategic planning is the process that helps define goals and vision by identifying what needs to be done and how to get it done. This also means understanding the competitive landscape, assessing the gaps and filling the need – with my product! A simple SWOT analysis goes a long way to beginning this exercise.

During COVID trends to work out seriously at home were born. Post COVID trends have evolved while being dedicated to working out but adding mindfulness and focus on mental health and nutrition. Overall well-being/long term fitness, workouts with recovery, stretch, rest and mobility, shorter work out times 45-60 minutes have become more popular as more people return to traditional work sites. Personal costs to stay vested in fitness and long health have to match personal budget as economics does play a part Finding the right online program amidst the universe of fitness programs is a challenge, but using a virtual trainer has the ultimate benefit for flexibility of location and timing, and using a customized personal trainer who will be your fitness coach is what I can do.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Easy answer for “least like”– the traffic… what a colossal waste of time to sit in traffic when there are so many other activities that I could accomplish

Hard answer for “best like”: the diversity of LA ie the very different neighborhoods, people and food; the sports teams; the focus on health and fitness that most Los Angelenos have only to be evidenced by the number of gyms and how packed they are at all times.
