Today we’d like to introduce you to La Faye Baker. They and their team shared their story with us below:
La Faye Baker, a native of Los Angeles, California, grew up exploring various athletic pursuits due to her tomboy nature. Among her interests were roller skating, basketball, volleyball, hula hooping, ice skating, and gymnastics, with the latter becoming her primary focus in high school and college. Her background in gymnastics ultimately paved the way for a career in entertainment as a stuntwoman. Her first role as a stunt performer was on the Heat of the Night on location. What an experience for a stuntwoman first job…
In 1999, La Faye Baker’s trajectory in the stunt industry soared when she caught the attention of Academy Award winner Halle Berry and her team, who handpicked her to serve as the stunt coordinator for the groundbreaking HBO film, “Introducing Dorothy Dandridge.” This monumental opportunity marked a historic milestone as Baker became the first African-American woman to assume such a pivotal role in a major production. Since then, her career has been marked by a series of notable projects, including her work as a stunt coordinator on productions such as “Family Reunion” and “Kingdom Business,” as well as her role as an assistant coordinator on hit shows like “Insecure” and “Black-ish.”
Baker’s journey into the world of stunts was fueled by her innate athleticism and fearlessness, evident from her remarkable feat of twirling 58 hula hoops at the age of 12, earning her a coveted spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. Building on this early display of physical prowess, Baker honed her skills in gymnastics and volleyball, laying the foundation for her future career as a stuntwoman. Even as an adult, she balanced her time between stunt work and serving as a probation officer, showcasing her dedication to both her craft and community.
Beyond her individual achievements, Baker is passionately committed to diversifying the stunt industry and empowering women within it. She channels her energy into initiatives such as the Action Icon Stuntwomen’s Conference, where WORKSHOPS have been offers to aspiring stuntwomen seeking stunt coordinators careers. Additionally, she founded the Action Icon Awards, an annual event that celebrates the accomplishments of stuntwomen, actresses, and extreme sports enthusiasts, all while raising funds for her nonprofit organization, Diamond in the RAW. Through Diamond in the RAW, Baker tirelessly works to uplift and empower foster care and at-risk teen girls through arts and STEM education, embodying her belief in the transformative power of opportunity and mentorship within the industry.
In her role as an entrepreneur, she established Stuntwoman Xtraordinaire Activewear, a brand embodying unapologetic expressions of feminism and excellence. As the visionary behind the brand, she aimed to convey strength and resilience through its apparel, catering to empowered and sophisticated women who lead extraordinary lives.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In the industry, I’ve encountered barriers stemming from the misconception that black performers lack qualifications. Often, individuals with familial ties or a legacy in entertainment gain early advantages, requiring latecomers to strive diligently for top positions. Despite pervasive industry harassment, as a former Peace Officer, I’ve prioritized maintaining my integrity and valuing self-respect above all. Additionally, emerging challenges from new media, AI, and streaming have adversely impacted the livelihoods of stunt performers.
What makes you happy?
As both a seasoned stunt performer and dedicated entrepreneur, my driving force emanates from a multitude of sources. At the core of my motivation lies a profound desire for inner peace, a steadfast commitment to inspiring the upcoming generation, and an unwavering determination to blaze trails in my industry. I find immense fulfillment in the exhilarating atmosphere of being on set, where creativity and passion collide to bring visions to life. Moreover, my happiness is intricately intertwined with my faith in a higher power, guiding me through challenges and triumphs alike. Equally vital to my journey is the invaluable support of a community of individuals who exude positivity and share my vision, fostering an environment ripe for growth and collaboration.
